What’s The Difference Between the Flu and a Cold?

Home > What’s The Difference Between the Flu and a Cold?

As the weather gets colder, many of us start to experience symptoms like a sore throat, runny nose, or cough. But how can you tell if it’s just a common cold or something more serious like the flu? While colds and flu share some symptoms, the flu tends to be more severe and may require medical attention. In this blog, we’ll explain how to tell the difference between a cold and the flu and when you should consider seeing your GP.

What is a Common Cold?

A common cold is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and upper respiratory system. It’s caused by several viruses, but rhinoviruses are the most common culprits. Cold symptoms are generally mild and come on slowly.

Typical cold symptoms include:

– Runny or blocked nose

– Sore throat

– Mild cough

– Sneezing

– Mild headaches

– Fatigue (slight)

What is the Flu?

The flu (influenza) is caused by the influenza virus and tends to hit more suddenly and harder than a cold. Although both share similar symptoms, the flu is more likely to cause serious health issues, especially in high-risk individuals such as young children, elderly people, or those with underlying medical conditions.

Typical flu symptoms include:

– High fever (often above 38°C)

– Muscle aches and joint pain

– Intense fatigue

– Dry cough

– Chills or sweats

– Sore throat

– Headaches

– Stuffy nose (less common than with a cold)

How to Tell the Difference Between a Cold and the Flu

Though colds and flu are both respiratory infections, there are some key differences:

– Onset: Cold symptoms tend to appear gradually, while flu symptoms come on suddenly.

– Fever: Colds rarely cause a high fever, but flu often results in a fever of 38°C or higher.

– Aches and Fatigue: Flu is typically accompanied by muscle aches and more intense fatigue, while these symptoms are mild or absent with a cold.

When Should You See a GP?

Most colds and cases of the flu will get better on their own with rest and home care. However, there are times when you should see a GP, especially if your symptoms are severe or you are in a high-risk group. Contact your GP if:

– Your fever lasts more than three days

– You have difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

– You experience chest pain or pressure

– Severe headaches or sinus pain develop with congestion

– You start to feel better but then symptoms suddenly worsen (this could signal a secondary infection)

– You are elderly, pregnant, or have a chronic health condition

If you’re unsure whether your symptoms are from a cold or the flu, it’s always better to seek professional advice. During a GP consultation, we can offer a diagnosis and recommend the right treatment, including antiviral medications to help with flu symptoms if necessary.
