Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma

Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma are types of bacteria transmitted through sexual contact causing infection of the genitals. Although not officially classed as an STI, Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma can cause uncomfortable symptoms if not treated. There is little known information about the long-term risks associated with the infection, however, many people go symptom-free. These tests aren’t normally tested for in routine NHS STI tests.

Possible symptoms of Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma infection –

Women

• Pain during sex
• Bleeding after sex
• Burning sensation when you wee
• Unusual discharge
• Swollen genitalia

Men

• Burning sensation when you wee
• Unusual discharge
• Urethritis

Infections can be tested via a urine sample or genital swab. Treatment is a course of antibiotics prescribed by your GP.
