Cholesterol is a type of fat (lipid) found in the body as well as certain foods and is essential for overall health. Too much cholesterol, however, can lead to harmful health complications, such as heart disease. There are different types of cholesterol in your blood, so, a blood test will help to show the levels of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol that indicate overall health risk. ‘Bad’ cholesterol may cause fatty deposits in the main arteries which could lead to heart attack and stroke. If you think you may be at risk, a cholesterol blood test may be something you discuss with your Midland Health GP. You may be required to fast for up to 8 hours before the test, to ensure accurate results. A full consultation to discuss the results may include advice around lifestyle factors as well as a full treatment plan.
