Weight loss injections refer to injections that contain medications or substances aimed at promoting weight loss. There are different types of injections from appetite suppressants and metabolism enhancers to fat absorption inhibitors. All of these injections are best used as part of a comprehensive weight management program and combined with a healthy diet and exercise plan.

Our weight loss injection treatment packages are all administered over 6 months. During this time the varying levels of packages will include the medication doses alongside a combination of GP consultations, nurse-led appointments and at least one conversation with our in-house dietician. Higher packages will also include at least one session with a CBT therapist.
During the 6-month treatment plan, you will receive a weekly dose of Wegovy,a prescription only medicine, which is injected subcutaneously into the abdomen (stomach, thigh or upper arm. This medicine is not administered intramuscularly or intravenously. It is also recommended to receive each dose at the same time of day and on the same day each week.
At Midland Health, we use the prescription medication of Wegovy, a semaglutide-containing injection.
Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, semaglutide works by replicating the action of the natural hormone GLP-1. GLP-1 is released in response to food intake and helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release and reducing the production of glucagon (a hormone that increases blood sugar).
Semaglutide has been shown to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin secretion and reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. In addition to its antidiabetic effects, semaglutide has also been investigated for its potential role in weight management. When administered once a week, this injection has been shown to be effective in promoting weight loss when combined with lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise.
Wegovy, a prescription only medicine, carries potential serious side effects, including the risk of thyroid tumours and some cancers. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as neck swelling, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath should promptly inform their healthcare provider. You should avoid these weight loss injections if there is a history of MTC in the family or if diagnosed with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Additionally, this treatment is not suitable if there's a history of serious allergic reactions to semaglutide or its components. Before commencing this weight loss plan, you must disclose medical conditions, including pancreas or kidney issues, type 2 diabetes with diabetic retinopathy history, depression, or pregnancy plans.
Common side effects encompass nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, upset stomach, dizziness, bloating, belching, gas, stomach flu, heartburn, runny nose, or sore throat. Individuals experiencing severe or persistent side effects should seek immediate medical attention.
Serious side effects include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems leading to gallstones, increased risk of low blood sugar in type 2 diabetes patients, kidney problems, serious allergic reactions, changes in vision, increased heart rate, and potential depression or suicidal thoughts.

Our semaglutide weight loss injections have the potential to be effective for obese and overweight individuals with a BMI of 27 or higher. In addition, it has been connected to those with obesity-related conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, as these conditions may improve with weight loss.
On the day of your appointment, you will be seen by one of our GP consultants to discuss your medical history and suitability for this treatment. If the GP is in agreement, you will also receive your first 4 weeks supply of the injections to take away or have the first dose administered with our weight loss GPs in clinic to show you how to do it.
Wegovy weight loss injections are best used alongside a healthy diet and plenty of exercise to aid weight loss; however, it is worth familiarising yourself with the safety before commencing this treatment plan.
You will need a consultation every 4 weeks to get a new 4 weeks supply of the injections. This consultation can be conducted online or face to face with our weight loss specialist clinicians. In addition to this, you will also receive appointments to see a dietician and, depending on your plan, a CBT therapist.
If you have an extremely high BMI of over 30, or even if you are around 27-30, it might be worth considering this alternative weight loss treatment to help lose some weight. The injections could help to control your appetite and improve your metabolic health, all the while losing weight. However, you will need to consider this alongside the safety advice and side effects.
