What is PCOS?

PCOS is a common hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, excessive androgen levels (male hormones), and cysts in the ovaries. While PCOS can cause a range of symptoms, it’s also manageable with the right treatment plan.

Symptoms to Look Out For

PCOS symptoms can vary widely from person to person, but common signs include:

  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Difficulty getting pregnant (infertility)
  • Excessive hair growth (hirsutism), particularly on the face, chest, or back
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Thinning hair or male-pattern baldness
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Fatigue and mood swings

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to seek professional care to manage your condition and improve your quality of life.

PCOS and Weight Gain

If you’re experiencing fluctuations in your weight, this could be a result of your PCOS.

Weight gain is a common symptom of PCOS, often due to hormonal imbalances and insulin resistance. However, it’s not a condition you have to manage on your own. Our specialists are here to help with personalised treatment plans that focus on healthy, sustainable weight management. This can include dietary advice, exercise plans, and, if necessary, medications to improve insulin sensitivity. We’ll work with you to address the root causes of weight gain and create a plan that fits your lifestyle, helping you achieve lasting results while managing your PCOS symptoms effectively.

Regain control over your PCOS symptoms.

FAQ

The most appropriate healthcare provider to see for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) would be an endocrinologist, especially one with experience in reproductive health. A gynaecologist, particularly one who specialises in fertility, may also be helpful, as they can address the menstrual irregularities and potential fertility concerns associated with PCOS.

Common warning signs of PCOS include:

  • Irregular periods or absence of menstruation
  • Excessive hair growth (hirsutism), particularly on the face, chest, and abdomen
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Thinning hair or male-pattern baldness
  • Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen
  • Difficulty getting pregnant (infertility) If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to seek a medical evaluation to confirm whether PCOS is the cause.

PCOS itself is generally not classified as a disability, but it can lead to complications that might affect your ability to work or perform daily activities. For example, if you experience significant infertility, chronic pain (such as from ovarian cysts), or severe metabolic issues, it might be possible to claim disability benefits. It's best to discuss your specific situation with a healthcare provider who can help assess whether you qualify.

PCOS is typically considered a spectrum rather than divided into distinct stages. However, symptoms can range in severity. If we were to broadly categorise the progression, it might be as follows:

  1. Early onset (teenage years) – Irregular periods and early signs of hormonal imbalances.
  2. Reproductive years – Increased symptoms such as hirsutism, weight gain, and possible infertility issues.
  3. Perimenopause – Worsening metabolic symptoms and possible worsening of hormonal imbalance as women approach menopause.
  4. Post-menopausal – Hormonal changes may stabilise, but women may still experience metabolic symptoms, such as an increased risk for diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Each person's experience of PCOS is unique, and the severity of symptoms can vary widely.

A ‘PCOS belly’ often refers to increased abdominal fat or central obesity, which is commonly seen in women with PCOS due to hormonal imbalances. The weight may accumulate around the waist or in an ‘apple-shaped’ pattern, and this fat distribution is linked to an increased risk of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims are typically based on how much a condition affects your ability to carry out daily tasks and mobility. While PCOS itself may not qualify you for PIP, if the condition leads to severe, long-term disability or has a significant impact on your daily life, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider or a benefits advisor to see if you qualify.

PCOS is not considered life-limiting in itself, meaning it does not shorten life expectancy. However, the metabolic and hormonal issues associated with PCOS can increase the risk of developing other conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial cancer. With proper management, most women with PCOS can live healthy, fulfilling lives.

Whether to disclose your PCOS diagnosis to your employer is a personal decision. If your symptoms significantly impact your ability to work (such as requiring time off for medical appointments or managing severe symptoms like fatigue), it might be helpful to inform your employer for accommodations. However, it's important to note that your employer is required to keep such information confidential.

Treatment for PCOS focuses on managing symptoms and preventing long-term complications. Common approaches include:

  • Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise to manage weight and improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Medications such as birth control pills or hormonal treatments to regulate periods and reduce symptoms like acne and excess hair growth.
  • Fertility treatments (if you're trying to conceive) such as ovulation induction therapy.
  • Metformin for improving insulin resistance and regulating blood sugar levels. Treatment is individualised depending on your symptoms, fertility goals, and other health concerns.

PCOS affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age globally, making it one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. The exact prevalence can vary depending on the population studied and the criteria used for diagnosis, but it's widely acknowledged as a common condition with significant health implications.

Yes, women with PCOS can get pregnant, but it may be more challenging due to irregular ovulation. Many women with PCOS can conceive with the help of fertility treatments such as medications to induce ovulation. It's best to work with an endocrinologist or fertility specialist to develop a personalised plan if you're trying to get pregnant.
