Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in the UK, accounting for 13% of all new cases. Lung cancer is the 2nd most common cancer for men and women; however, the highest incidence is in those aged 85-89. The sooner lung cancer can be detected, the higher the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

There is currently no screening program for lung cancer in the UK as routine tests can be risky and expensive, and there is insufficient research to support their effectiveness at the level of public health. If you are in a high-risk group due to age, lifestyle factors such as long-term smoking, a family history or you have a diagnosis of COPD, it may be advisable for you to discuss screening with your Midland Health GP. Consultation may involve a discussion regarding your symptoms and your doctor may ask you to breathe into a device called a spirometer. It may be suggested that you take a blood test to check for alternative diagnoses e.g. a chest infection, or you may be referred for a chest x-ray, CT/ PET scan or bronchoscopy. With Midland Health, we can provide you with guidance and support every step of the way.

Our EarlyCDT—Lung measures blood levels of a panel of seven autoantibodies to tumour-associated antigens that are linked to lung cancer. It is an extensively validated test that can detect all types of lung cancer at all stages of disease (I-IV) with high accuracy.
