There are 20 new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed for women every day in the UK. Ovarian cancer is the 6th most common cancer for women, however, incidence rates are highest for those aged 75-79. The sooner ovarian cancer can be detected, the higher the chances of successful treatment and recovery.
A cervical smear does not test for ovarian cancer. Research is currently looking into methods of early detection such as a transvaginal ultrasound or blood test. We are able to arrange CA125 testing, a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound scan or one of our extensive genetic tests which covers up to 30 different cancer genes. Please book in for a consultation with one of our friendly Midland Health GPs who can advise you on this testing.
If 2 or more members of your family on the same side have previously been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer under the age of 50, then you may be at risk. If you believe you are at risk, come and talk to a Midland Health GP. We can talk you through the signs and symptoms as well as perform further testing as needed. Testing for cancer is un-nerving process which too many people have to go through. Midland Health will guide the way.
