Anaemia is a condition caused by low haemoglobin or red blood cell count. Symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, pale skin, brittle nails and dry mouth/ gums. The most common cause of anaemia is iron deficiency which can occur through diet, blood loss, chronic disease or pregnancy. For some, difficulty absorbing vitamin B12 or folic acid may also lead to a diagnosis of anaemia.

Anaemia is diagnosed via a blood test. Treatment is usually a combination of dietary recommendations alongside certain supplements. If you are concerned about anaemia, it may be helpful to book in with your Midland Health GP to discuss testing and lifestyle factors which may affect your risk.
