Private Vascular Ultrasound Scans in Birmingham

Home > Private Vascular Ultrasound Scans in Birmingham

Vascular ultrasound scans are a safe, non-invasive and invaluable imaging modality that will detect circulation issues involving the arteries, veins or both systems in the body. Arterial and/or venous insufficiency results in abnormal blood flow and function of the brain, organs and limbs.

Diagnostic ultrasounds are useful to rule out acute or chronic vascular conditions such as a Deep Vein Thrombosis. Vascular ultrasound may also be used to screen family members who have a history of life-threatening health conditions such as aneurysms or strokes. A referral will help to determine root causes for a host of symptoms in limbs or elsewhere such as- swelling, aching, itching, burning, cramps, pain, heaviness, restricted mobility, numbness, tingling, weakness, visual disturbances or non-healing wounds. Based on an ultrasound scan a treatment plan can also be made to improve the cosmetic appearance of varicose veins and their symptoms

Generally, the symptoms of blocked arteries or veins are not always noticeable. Getting the appropriate referral and timely assessment will not always be possible. To get your life back on track or have that peace of mind, a simple screening test may be advised before complications lead to a potentially life-threatening issue.

At Midland Health, a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Vascular Radiologist team will perform a clinical examination and arrange a private vascular ultrasound to assess the body’s circulatory system.

Vascular Ultrasound Scan Overview

Our vascular ultrasound scans provide a non-invasive and painless way of assessing blood flow in the body’s arteries and veins. Using high-frequency sound waves, a specialist or sonographer will lightly pass the probe across the skin. Depending on the scan you are undergoing, you will be asked to lie or sit down on an ultrasound table. Alternatively, you may be asked to stand on a step.

This process allows us to produce a real-time image of the blood flow and detect any blood clots or blockages. Our experts always have your best interests in mind and, if necessary, will advise further tests or treatment.

Our Vascular Ultrasound Services

At our private diagnostic clinic in Birmingham, our experts can carry out a plethora of vascular ultrasound scans, providing you with a comprehensive blood flow image. We can diagnose and manage conditions ranging from deep venous thrombosis and chronic venous pathologies. Our specialists are proud to offer:

Our deep vein thrombosis ultrasound scans produce images of the deep veins in the leg. Duplex scans provide real-time views of the flow and patency of the deep veins. Doppler spectral analysis of flow and compression testing are techniques used to rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT). An incompressible vein is suggestive of a blood clot that is preventing it from collapsing. In such cases, an ultrasound will locate the site and severity of a deep vein thrombosis. If the test is positive, our specialists will explain your results to you and discuss suitable treatment to stop clotting and reduce any pain or swelling.

Varicose vein ultrasounds are designed to check for venous insufficiency, more commonly known as varicose veins. As the veins are not able to pump blood to the heart, the blood vessels become enlarged over time. The test produces an image of blood flow to evaluate sites of incompetent valves and reversal of flow in veins. The Vascular Radiologist will check for deep venous thrombosis and assess which veins are suitable for endovenous laser treatment, foam sclerotherapy or removing a vein (phlebectomy). Alternatively, a lifestyle change with graduated compression stocking would be recommended to improve venous insufficiency if treatment is unsuitable.

We are able to offer carotid ultrasound scans to produce images of the arteries in the neck. This scan is ideal for excluding carotid artery disease in patients who have a family history of stroke or as a pre-operative screening assessment before cardiac surgery. This provides a painless and effective way of assessing the flow of blood to the eyes and the brain, helping to determine whether there are blockages or narrowing in your arteries. Our clinical expert will apply a gel to your neck and pass the ultrasound probe across your neck to assess the length of the carotid arteries. At your next appointment, the expert will discuss their findings with you and your options for treatment if necessary.

At Midland Health, we only use state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. This allows us to carry out aorta ultrasounds. For those at risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (swelling in the aorta), this method of ultrasound screening allows us to exclude the presence of an aortic aneurysm, measure the size of the aorta and prevent rupture by monitoring the growth rate over time with regular follow up surveillance. If the specialist finds a problem, they will explain your treatment options during a follow-up appointment.

What Can You Expect From A Vascular Ultrasound Scan?

Our private vascular ultrasounds are always carried out by our qualified and highly trained vascular radiologist. At Midland Health, we strive to ensure that you are always in control of your health. That is why we offer a compassionate and friendly approach to vascular ultrasounds while ensuring that the procedure is thorough and provides you with all the detail you need to understand your blood vessel health. At the beginning of your appointment, your specialist will talk you through the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

Depending on the type of vascular ultrasound you are having, you will be asked to sit or lie on an ultrasound bed, or alternatively, you will be asked to stand on a step. A gel will then be applied to the area of the body that will be examined. Following this, the sonographer will move the probe over your skin with light pressure to produce an image of your blood flow.

Once the image has been analysed and a diagnosis has been made, the specialist will arrange a follow-up appointment to share their findings, as well as the cause of your symptoms. They will also discuss your potential next steps, including any further tests if necessary.
