What to expect from your first appointment

When you come to your first appointment at Midland Health, your women's health physiotherapist will discuss any issues you are experiencing and will conduct a detailed assessment of your symptoms.

If more information is needed, your doctor may ask you to keep a bladder diary. That would require you to write down what you are drinking during a period of time (usually, three days), as well as how often you go to the toilet and how much urine you pass.

If you are suffering from bladder and pelvic pain symptoms, your physiotherapist might ask you to undergo a vaginal examination to assess your pelvic floor muscles. If you don’t feel comfortable doing the check on your first exam, that’s perfectly fine. You will be offered appropriate treatment regardless.

Expect your initial appointment to take between 30 - 60 minutes. Once our expert women’s physiotherapist has been able to thoroughly assess your case, you will be offered a completely bespoke treatment plan designed for you.

Can I have physiotherapy if I'm pregnant?

Yes, we are experts in pregnancy physiotherapy and we have helped numerous expectant mothers reduce pelvic girdle pain and get a good night’s sleep. As part of the treatment, we only use gentle and relaxing techniques as well as specialist pregnancy exercises that are perfectly safe for you and your baby.

Do I need to bring anything to my first appointment?

If you have any documentation from previous medical tests and treatments, it would be useful to have those with you when you first come to see your physiotherapist. If you have kept a bladder diary, please bring that along as well.

How many treatment sessions do I need?

Every woman is different and so will be your tailored treatment plan. However, as a guideline, women’s health physio typically consists of 8-16 sessions.
