Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver, caused by a virus spread through direct contact with blood or bodily fluids. In healthy adults, the infection does not cause any obvious symptoms, and will pass within a couple of months. However, in young children, Hepatitis B can persist for much longer and potentially lead to serious liver damage.
The Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for certain at-risk groups including those from previously high-risk countries, those who inject drugs and those who have unprotected sex with multiple sexual partners. It is also recommended for people who may be working with bloodborne products or in close contact with people who could be at risk. At our private clinics in Birmingham and Leicester, you can discuss your vaccine options with one of our friendly GPs that will answer any questions that you might have.
