Our ENT Surgeons (also known as Otolaryngologists) treat a wide range of ear, nose and throat conditions that affect adults and children. They can assess your condition, as well as advise you on the best possible treatments and diagnostics, such as a private nasendoscopy. You do not need a referral from your NHS GP, and we can often offer same-day appointments with an ENT surgeon in our Birmingham-based clinic.
Below is a small example of what we can offer at Midland Health.
We offer a full ENT consultation service that covers a wide range of ENT issues such as hearing loss, congestion, blocked nose, tonsillitis, snoring, voice change to name a few. Our ENT surgeon will be able to carry out a thorough History and examination of your complaint. If appropriate in some cases in houses procedures can be offered. Following a consultation all patients are sent a comprehensive consultation letter and the writing of any prescriptions are included in the consultation fee.
Over the last few years we have seen increasing research demonstrating the long term problems that snoring and sleep apnoea can causes. ENT surgeons are well placed to assess the cause of your snoring / OSA and recommend a treatment plan to help you sleep better. The treatment depends on the area of obstruction. It could be the nasal passages, tonsils, tongue base, Palatal or the jaw position. We are able to assess patients to identify which treatment is likely to help them and then provide a treatment plan.
OSA in children is a common problem that can present as poor sleep, restlessness, waking at night and irritable or tired during the daytime. Untreated OSA has been shown to negatively impact a child’s schooling and educational attainment. Over a long period of time can result in pulmonary hypertension and right sided heart failure if left untreated.
Hearing loss can be caused be a number of treatable conditions, from something simple like ear wax impaction to a tumour. Hearing loss is broadly classified as conductive and sensorineural with each one requiring a different management approach. At Midland Health we can quickly diagnose and manage your hearing loss. Some hearing loss can be easily managed with earwax microsuction while other causes may require surgery or a hearing aid. Seeing an ENT surgeon will help you get to the cause and treatment of your hearing loss.
Dizziness and Vertigo is a complicated symptom that can be due to a number of causes. One of these causes is ear disease. Common causes may include acute labyrinthitis, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and Meniere’s disease. We are able to assess your cause and develop a treatment plan depending on the cause. On occasions your symptoms may be due to neurological, cardiac, or musculoskeletal problems. Seeing a Consultant ENT Surgeon will help in the diagnosis of the cause of your dizziness
There are many types of ear infections from the outer ear infections to middle ear infections. Some are caused by using cotton buds, swimming, scratching the ear canal, and the common cold. Outer ear infections can be best treated with microsuction and antibacterial ear drops, while middle ear infections are treated with oral antibiotics. It is very important to differentiate these infections as they treatments are different. Recurrent middle ear infections may require surgery to prevent further damage to the sensitive structures of the ear. Undergoing careful review and examination by our Consultant ENT Surgeon will help define the exact cause and nature of your “Ear infection” and allow us to recommend the correct treatment.
Whilst prominent ears may not represent a medical disease they can seriously affect an individual’s confidence. ENT surgeons can assess the level of deformity and suggest what the best course of treatment may be. In very young children surgery can be avoided by the use of an appropriate head bandage while older children and adults may benefit from surgery.
Many people may have chosen to pierce their ears but some go on to regret the disfigurement that this can causes. In many cases our Consultant ENT Surgeon will be able to provide an assessment of the level of disfigurement and how we can help to provide a normal looking ear.
A number of ENT conditions such as adenoid and turbinate enlargement, septal deviation, sinusitis and allergies can cause nasal symptoms. In many cases patients spend years being incorrectly diagnosed and its not until they have seen an ENT Surgeon and undergone a Clinic Endoscopic Nasal Examination that their condition is correctly diagnosed and treated. At Midland Health we are able to provide clinic based endoscopic examinations and treatment plans for your long standing sinus and nasal symptoms.
Reoccurring infections of the tonsils is a very common ENT problem that effects adult and children. The commonest treatment is a tonsillectomy. Whilst a number of surgical techniques exist we use the gold standard in tonsillectomy – “Co-ablation Tonsillectomy”. This is an evidence-based technique that reduces pain and post-operative bleeding risk over conventional methods. In many cases people return to school and work within the week compared to the normal 2-week recovery period.
Neck lumps can be caused by a number of problems from simple skin lesions to cancers. Having neck lumps correctly examined and assessed is vital. At Midland Health we take all lumps seriously. Our Consultant ENT Surgeon will carefully examine your neck, examining your skin, thyroid, lymph nodes, submandibular, parotid glands and your ears. We would also recommend an endoscopic examination to identify the correct cause of your neck lump and its treatment.
Voice change can be a consequence of a number of problems from laryngitis to vocal cord cancers. Our clinic endoscopic equipment allows our Consultant ENT Surgeon to examine your throat and voice box in order to evaluate the cause of your symptoms.
There are many reasons for facial discomfort and headaches. Problems with sinuses may cause pain in the face. An ENT consultant is able to diagnose and help you manage this problem.
Tongue Ties can provide a problem in the newborn child. Tongue ties can prevent breastfeeding and require a timely release. There has been a worrying trend for tongue tie release to be performed in a non-medical setting by non-doctors.
