What is an Electrocardiogram?

An electrogram is a non-invasive test that monitors your heart’s electrical activity and rhythm. It allows our expert cardiologists to detect and diagnose multiple different heart problems and conditions. That way, we can provide you with the necessary treatment.

During an ECG, we attach electrode sensors to your body and monitor the electrical signals from your heartbeat. The results are displayed in a graph and tell us about your heart’s health.

Factors Influencing your Heart’s Health

Certain aspects of your lifestyle and diet can impact your heart’s health and performance. The following factors can increase your risk of heart conditions:

  • Smoking
  • Lack of exercise
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Drinking alcohol

When You Need an ECG

We use ECGs to identify heart conditions and can perform the test in conjunction with other exams like blood tests. They can detect arrhythmias, coronary heart disease, heart attacks, cardiomyopathy and many other issues.

After a GP or cardiologist consultation, we may suggest an ECG test to learn more about your heart, especially if you have had previous complications or a family history of heart conditions.

If you regularly experience the following symptoms, you may have a heart problem that an ECG could detect:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Faintness

How We Conduct the Test

When you come to our Edgbaston clinic for an ECG test, we attach sensors to your chest, arms and legs. These sensors connect to a monitoring device that detects the electric pulses generated by your heart as it beats.

You can eat, drink and act as usual before your ECG test. You will have to remove clothing from your torso to apply the sensors to your chest, and we may have to shave any hair to stick them in place. We advise that you do not use oil or moisturiser on your chest, arms or legs beforehand as they can prevent the electrodes from sticking.

Types of ECG

Depending on your condition and needs, we can carry out various ECGs to understand your heart’s performance. We will often use a combination of tests to gain data in different circumstances, including:

During a resting ECG, we will monitor your heart activity whilst you lie in a comfortable position. Generally, it takes between five and ten minutes to collect the data.

An exercise ECG is performed while you are on a treadmill or exercise bike, monitoring your heart when it is under strain. We use this test to understand how your heart’s performance changes between rest and activity.

We may perform an ambulatory ECG over 24 or 48 hours to gather additional information and provide a more comprehensive diagnosis. The electrodes are connected to a small portable monitor that you can carry around while going about your daily life. This longer test gives us a broader picture of your heart’s activity.

Getting Your Results

An ECG machine displays your results in a graph. Our consultant cardiologist can access these results digitally and interpret them to diagnose heart complications and create a tailored treatment plan. Often, we can process the ECG results during the same appointment, just after completing the test. Our expert cardiologists and cardiac physiologists will report on each ECG and our private GPs will ensure all ECG results are communicated to you in a very efficient way.

FAQ

Not at all. An ECG test involves attaching small electrode sensors to your chest to monitor your heart. They are usually on for just a few minutes and are not painful.

You should see a cardiologist and get an ECG if you regularly experience:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Faintness

We recommend that you consult our GPs and cardiologists before booking an ECG to check whether it is the best option for you.

ECGs are quick and safe. Whilst they use electrode sensors, no electricity enters the body during the test. The only discomfort you may experience is when you remove the sticky electrodes from your body.

Our experts will be by your side throughout the test to ensure your comfort and safety.
