Home > Private Paediatric Dermatology in Birmingham

At our private paediatric dermatology clinic in Birmingham, we offer support and consultation for a range of common paediatric complaints as well as more infrequent conditions. Get in touch with us today to arrange your child’s consultation.

Do I Need an Appointment?

It’s natural to feel unsure about whether a skin change in your child needs a specialist opinion, especially when it’s hard to tell if something is a passing rash or a sign that needs closer attention.

If your child has a skin, hair or nail concern that has not settled, is causing them discomfort, or is affecting their confidence, a paediatric dermatology assessment can help you understand what is happening and talk through your options together.

Many parents come to us after noticing a change themselves, while others are guided by a GP or health visitor. Either way, you are welcome to arrange a consultation whenever you feel ready.

Important Safety Information

If your child has sudden, widespread blistering, a rapidly spreading rash with a fever, or any swelling affecting their breathing, please seek urgent medical attention by calling 999 or attending your nearest A&E department.

Our Dermatology Services

Our paediatric dermatologists can help your child with the following complaints:

Inflammatory Skin Disease

Inflammatory skin diseases encompass a wide range of conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and urticaria, characterised by redness, itching, and discomfort. Our paediatric dermatology service provides expert diagnosis and personalised management strategies to alleviate symptoms and improve children's quality of life.

Paediatric Eczema

Paediatric eczema management focuses on providing effective care for children who experience eczema, a chronic skin condition characterised by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin patches. Dermatologists specialising in paediatrics offer tailored treatment plans that may include topical medications, emollients, and lifestyle adjustments. The goal is to alleviate discomfort, reduce flare-ups, and enhance the quality of life for young patients with eczema.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder affecting children, causing red, scaly patches on the skin's surface. Paediatric dermatology services for psoriasis encompass a range of treatment options, such as topical therapies, phototherapy, and systemic medications. Dermatologists work closely with young patients and their families to manage symptoms, minimise skin lesions, and promote healthy skin development.

Paediatric Acne

Paediatric acne treatment is a crucial service offered by dermatologists to address the common skin condition of acne in children and adolescents. It involves personalised assessment and management plans tailored to the unique needs of young patients. Through a combination of topical treatments, oral medications, and lifestyle recommendations, dermatologists aim to alleviate acne symptoms, prevent scarring, and improve the overall skin health of their paediatric patients.

Urticaria

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a condition characterised by itchy welts or raised red patches on the skin. Paediatric dermatology services for urticaria involve identifying triggers, prescribing antihistamines, and recommending lifestyle adjustments to manage and alleviate symptoms. Dermatologists aim to provide relief and improve the quality of life for children with urticaria.

Haemangiomas in Children

Haemangiomas are benign growths of blood vessels that commonly occur in infants and young children. Our paediatric dermatologists specialise in evaluating and managing haemangiomas, offering clear monitoring and intervention if appropriate.

Birth Marks

Birthmarks are common skin anomalies that can be present at birth or emerge shortly afterwards. Our paediatric dermatology team specialises in evaluating and managing various types of birthmarks, providing tailored treatment plans to ensure both cosmetic and medical concerns are addressed effectively.

Hair and Nail Problems

Hair and nail issues in children can range from fungal infections to genetic abnormalities affecting growth and appearance. Our paediatric dermatology experts offer comprehensive evaluation and targeted treatment plans to address these concerns and promote healthy hair and nail development.

Congenital Naevi

Congenital nevi are moles present at birth, which can vary in size and appearance. Our dedicated paediatric dermatologists offer thorough assessment and management strategies for congenital nevi, focusing on early detection of any potential complications or malignancies, although these are rare.

Moles are common skin features that should be monitored for changes that might indicate malignancy. Our paediatric dermatology team offers thorough mole assessment and if necessary, safe and minimally invasive removal techniques to ensure peace of mind for both parents and children.

Mole Mapping

Mole mapping is a specialised paediatric dermatology service that involves the comprehensive monitoring and documentation of moles or pigmented spots on a child's skin. By utilising advanced imaging techniques and digital tools, dermatologists can create a detailed map of these skin marks, aiding in the early detection of potential changes that might indicate skin cancer or other abnormalities. Mole mapping is an essential preventative measure to ensure the ongoing health and safety of a child's skin.

Dermatologists specialising in paediatrics offer skin tag and wart removal services to address these common skin growths in children. Using various techniques such as topical therapy, cryotherapy, or surgical removal, dermatologists can safely remove these growths, improving both the cosmetic appearance and comfort of young patients.

Diagnostic Biopsy

Diagnostic biopsies are precise procedures to obtain tissue samples from the skin for detailed examination, aiding in the accurate diagnosis of various skin conditions in children. Our paediatric dermatology service performs these biopsies skilfully, contributing to effective treatment planning.

Minor Surgery

Certain skin conditions in children may require minor surgical procedures for removal or treatment. Our skilled paediatric dermatologists perform these procedures with precision and care, prioritising both the child's well-being and optimal cosmetic results.

What to Expect

When you bring your child to our paediatric dermatology consultations, you can expect our friendly dermatologist to start by carefully listening to your child's history and conducting a thorough examination of their skin.

Diagnosis

In some cases, we might need to do additional tests like blood tests, urine tests, X-rays, or special procedures such as dermoscopy (using a magnifying lens), microscopic analysis of hair samples, swabs for infections, nail clippings examination, and skin biopsies.

Treatment Options

Once we have a diagnosis, our team may suggest treatments like creams, lotions, medications, or dressings. Our medical professionals will walk you through how to use them and provide guidance on general skin care. If more specialised treatments are necessary, we'll guide you to the appropriate medical facility. Our goal is to make your child's visit as comfortable and effective as possible.

How Does Private Paediatric Dermatology Work?

Private paediatric dermatology provides specialised medical care for children and adolescents with skin, hair, and nail conditions in a private healthcare setting. This encompasses diagnosis, treatment, and management of dermatological issues. The process involves scheduling appointments, initial consultations involving medical history and thorough examinations, diagnosis backed by possible tests, tailored treatment plans, patient education, and follow-up appointments. Effective communication and collaboration with parents, confidentiality, billing arrangements, and potential collaboration with other specialists are integral. Private paediatric dermatology prioritises individualised care in a comfortable environment, necessitating careful selection of qualified dermatologists experienced in paediatric care.

The Benefits of Seeing a Dermatologist

Consulting a paediatric dermatologist for your child's skin, hair, and nail concerns offers numerous benefits due to their specialised expertise in treating young patients. These advantages include tailored treatment plans that account for developmental stages, accurate diagnoses of paediatric-specific skin conditions, minimised treatment risks for children, and the ability to address chronic conditions and signal potential health issues early on. Paediatric dermatologists also excel in age-appropriate communication with children and parents, adopting a holistic approach to treatment that considers overall well-being. Through continuity of care, families can monitor progress and access advanced treatments under the guidance of specialists who comprehend the distinct requirements of paediatric skin health.
