HIV is a viral infection passed on through the exchange of bodily fluids e.g. unprotected sex, sharing of needles or mother to baby. The virus attacks cells of the immune system leaving a person with compromised ability to defend against infections in the future. Over time, HIV may develop into Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) as a person develops several opportunistic infections. It is estimated that 1 in 3 people living with HIV is unaware, so, if you think you may be at risk, it may be a good idea to come and get tested.

How do we test for HIV?

We offer 2 types of tests: an instant test which a result can be made available to you in less than 20 minutes at the clinic or a blood sample which we send off for testing.

Testing involves taking a routine blood sample which is sent to the lab and returned within 1 day. The results are shared with you via your chosen method of communication and will always be made discrete and kept confidential.

Positive Results

A positive result can have a significant impact on a person’s life, but here at Midland Health, we will help you every step of the way. Discuss treatment options with your GP, access medications and learn about support groups where you can meet others in the same position.

If you suspect you might be at risk of HIV, it is advised you see a medical expert as soon as possible to get tested. If HIV is diagnosed from an early stage, you can get treatment in order to avoid becoming ill. Sometimes, it may be two weeks after being exposed to the virus before an HIV test shows an accurate result.
