Our ADHD Services

We have curated a very comprehensive approach to the assessment and management of ADHD at our private clinic. Our ADHD specialists are available to carry out:

  • Gold standard diagnostic interviews for ADHD
  • Object computerised ADHD assessments
  • Continuous performance tests measuring ADHD symptoms
  • Medication management and optimisation
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy and ADHD coaching sessions
  • Support for the wider family

Our goal is to assess the practical consequences of ADHD and also evaluate the presence of any concurrent conditions like ASD, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, sleep disturbances, substance misuse, and mood/emotional issues. As a data-driven service, we will utilise the data and baseline metrics we gather to track outcomes and responses to treatment interventions.

Adults ADHD Assessments

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is frequently seen in children who fall within the Autism Spectrum Scale, but this neurological condition can persist into adulthood. Many adults grapple with the challenges of ADHD, which can impact their work, relationships, and social interactions, even within the confines of their homes. The absence of an official diagnosis can make it challenging to comprehend why certain behavioural traits manifest or why difficulties arise in situations where others don't encounter similar issues. Consequently, at our private London ADHD clinic, we offer face-to-face ADHD assessments for adults, facilitating a deeper understanding of your unique traits and symptoms.

Regardless of your age, we are committed to offering formal ADHD testing, along with assessments for other behavioural conditions. Furthermore, our consultant psychiatrist will ensure that you not only identify your ADHD as an adult but also receive the necessary support and knowledge to effectively manage and treat your condition.

It is essential to note that should you decide to discontinue your treatment and wish to resume it at a later time, you may need to schedule a new consultation with our Psychiatrist, Dr Hossein Rostamipour. This appointment spans 90 minutes and incurs a fee of £1250.

Our Approach

Our approach to helping adults with ADHD symptoms or a diagnosis is all about understanding you as an individual. Our experienced psychologist will carefully evaluate your symptoms, their duration, and input from those close to you to determine the type of ADHD you may have and identify any potential additional conditions like mood disorders.

Once we have a clear picture, we tailor a personalised treatment plan to support your well-being. We'll collaborate with you to determine the most suitable approach, whether it involves medication, therapy, or a combination of both.

Additionally, we offer comprehensive support for caregivers of children with ADHD, providing guidance on understanding your child's needs and helping them through their diagnosis and treatment.

Our professionals may prescribe various medications to adults with ADHD to help manage their symptoms. The choice of medication depends on the individual's specific needs and the healthcare provider's assessment. The two main types of medications used to treat ADHD are stimulant medications and non-stimulant medications.

Some commonly prescribed medications include:

1. Stimulant Medications:

  • Methylphenidate-Based Medications: These medications include brands like Ritalin, Concerta, and Equasym. Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant that can help improve attention and reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity.
  • Amphetamine-Based Medications: One of the most commonly prescribed amphetamine-based medications in the UK is lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse). It is a long-acting medication that helps with ADHD symptoms.

2. Non-Stimulant Medications:

  • Atomoxetine (Strattera): This non-stimulant medication is commonly prescribed for ADHD in the UK. It affects norepinephrine levels in the brain and can help with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
  • Guanfacine (Intuniv) and Clonidine (Dixarit): These medications are alpha-2 adrenergic agonists and can be used in some cases to manage ADHD symptoms.

The choice of medication depends on the individual's specific needs and any potential contraindications or side effects. It's important for adults with ADHD to work closely with a healthcare professional, such as a psychiatrist, who can assess their condition and tailor the treatment to their needs.

ADHD medication in the UK is typically prescribed in conjunction with other interventions, such as therapy or behavioural strategies, to provide comprehensive management of the disorder. Medication alone is often not the sole treatment but can be a valuable component of a multimodal approach to managing ADHD.

Before starting any medication for ADHD, it's crucial for individuals to have a thorough evaluation and discussion with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan and to monitor the medication's effectiveness and any potential side effects.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach that seeks to improve an individual's well-being by reshaping dysfunctional behaviours, thoughts, and emotions. Its primary goal is to empower individuals by addressing negative thoughts that hinder their potential.

On the other hand, ADHD Coaching is an intervention designed to assist those with ADHD in maintaining focus on tasks, providing ongoing support, and enhancing skills like time management, planning, goal setting, and problem-solving.

In some cases, combining CBT and ADHD coaching can yield the best results, as research indicates. This integrated approach offers several benefits, including:

  • Improved focus by minimising distractions.
  • Regulation of sleep patterns.
  • Enhanced decision-making.
  • Better control of impulsive behaviour.
  • Achieving a healthy work-life balance.

Patients also gain valuable self-regulation strategies to address common challenges associated with ADHD, such as sustaining motivation, managing time effectively, meeting deadlines, staying focused, controlling impulsivity, and improving social skills.

Incorporating Wellbeing and Mindfulness in Adult ADHD Treatment is essential. Self-care, including regular exercise, is a fundamental practice in this context. Physical activity increases dopamine release, which enhances focus and attention in individuals with ADHD. Additionally, exercise triggers the release of endorphins, providing a sense of well-being and euphoria.

Mindfulness Meditation, as an alternative ADHD treatment, centres on heightened awareness of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. This approach helps individuals with ADHD by improving their attention, focus, and emotional awareness. It empowers them to better manage impulsive reactions, a common challenge for those with ADHD.

The Causes of ADHD

While the exact cause of ADHD is not completely understood, there is evidence to suggest it derives from a combination of genetic, neurobiological and environmental factors. It is also possible for this complex neurodevelopment disorder to be brought on by psychosocial factors as well as brain injuries and trauma.

  • Genetics: There is strong evidence to suggest a genetic component to ADHD. If a family member, especially a first-degree relative like a parent or sibling, has ADHD, there is an increased risk of developing the disorder. Certain genes that regulate the brain's neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) are thought to play a role in ADHD.
  • Neurobiology: Brain imaging studies have shown differences in the structure and function of the brains of individuals with ADHD. These differences primarily involve the areas responsible for attention, impulse control, and executive functions. An imbalance of neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine, is also associated with ADHD.
  • Environmental Factors: While genetics and neurobiology play a significant role, environmental factors can contribute to the development or exacerbation of ADHD symptoms. These factors may include prenatal exposure to toxins, maternal smoking or alcohol use during pregnancy, premature birth, low birth weight, and early childhood exposure to lead or other environmental toxins.
  • Brain Injuries and Trauma: In some cases, head injuries or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) may lead to the development of ADHD symptoms, especially if the injury affects the frontal lobes of the brain, which are involved in executive functions and impulse control.
  • Psychosocial Factors: Factors like early childhood adversity, family stress, or a chaotic home environment may increase the risk of developing ADHD or worsening its symptoms. While these factors do not directly cause ADHD, they can exacerbate existing symptoms.

Diagnosing ADHD in adults involves a thorough assessment by a healthcare professional, including a clinical interview, a review of the person's medical and psychological history, and the observation of ADHD symptoms. Once diagnosed, treatment options may include therapy, medication, and lifestyle modifications to help manage the condition and improve daily functioning.

Symptoms

The symptoms of ADHD in adults can vary but generally fall into two categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. It's important to note that not all adults with ADHD will exhibit the same symptoms, and the severity of symptoms can also differ.

Here are some common symptoms:

Inattention:

  • Difficulty staying focused on tasks or activities, often becoming easily distracted by unrelated thoughts or external stimuli.
  • Frequent careless mistakes in work or other activities, difficulty sustaining attention to details.
  • Trouble organising tasks and activities, such as messy workspaces or difficulty managing time effectively.
  • Avoiding or procrastinating on tasks that require sustained mental effort.
  • Forgetfulness, such as losing items, missing appointments, or frequently switching between tasks.
  • Difficulty following through on instructions or completing tasks, especially those that are monotonous or do not provide immediate rewards.
  • Poor time management and difficulty prioritising tasks.

Hyperactivity/Impulsivity:

  • Restlessness or an inability to sit still, often manifesting as fidgeting, tapping, or pacing.
  • Impulsive behaviour which may include making hasty decisions without considering the consequences.
  • Difficulty waiting for one's turn or frequently interrupting others during conversations.
  • Talking excessively or feeling the need to fill silence in conversations.
  • Difficulty with impulse control, leading to emotional outbursts or anger problems.
  • Engaging in risky behaviours without thinking through the potential negative outcomes.

These symptoms can have a significant impact on an adult's daily life, affecting their work, relationships, and overall well-being.

Review of Dr Rostamipour

Should I Consider an ADHD Assessment?

ADHD has diverse impacts on your daily life. It's characterised by the challenge of maintaining focus on a single task for an extended duration and a tendency to overlook details. This frequently results in concentration issues, limited organisational abilities, and struggles with meeting deadlines. Additionally, it can lead to bouts of frustration, culminating in outbursts of anger, or manifest as significant impatience.

This can have a negative impact on your professional working life, as well as take a toll on your interpersonal relationships. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consider seeing our Psychiatrist at our London ADHD clinic for a private assessment. With our London ADHD Psychiatrist and the wider Midland Health team by your side, you won’t have to struggle alone; we’ll help you manage your condition at our private London ADHD clinic.

What If I Have Already Been Diagnosed with ADHD?

Our experienced Psychiatrist will examine your existing ADHD evaluation and, if deemed necessary, conduct a consultation. Regardless of whether your diagnosis was previously established at a different clinic or in another country, our Psychiatrist will conduct a treatment consultation. Your assessment report will undergo a thorough review, and a consultation will be scheduled, which may include your initial prescription if appropriate.

This consultation will be conducted in person at our London ADHD clinic and is suitable for patients who have undergone assessments elsewhere and wish to initiate medication. The appointment will be arranged after a review, based on the doctor's recommendations.

Requirements: A complete assessment report for review (a non-refundable fee of £75 is to be paid in advance).

Our Private ADHD Clinic in London

An ADHD clinic is a specialised healthcare facility that provides assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services for individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These clinics typically offer comprehensive evaluations, counselling, and medication management for ADHD.

The assessment for ADHD in a private healthcare setting is usually conducted by qualified healthcare professionals, such as Consultant Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, or ADHD Specialists. They are responsible for conducting a thorough evaluation, which may involve interviews, questionnaires, and psychological assessments.

The expected timeframe for receiving assessment results can vary but is generally within a few weeks to a couple of months. Private clinics often aim to provide a prompt diagnosis and treatment plan to address ADHD-related concerns.

In the event of an ADHD diagnosis, individuals may receive recommendations for appropriate treatments, which can include behavioural therapies and medication. The implications can vary based on the individual's specific circumstances, and the healthcare provider will work with the patient to develop a personalised treatment plan.

The cost of an ADHD assessment in private healthcare varies depending on the clinic, the extent of the assessment, and any additional services provided. Contact us today to find out more.

We provide Shared Care Agreements (SCA) which give the option to continue treatment with your NHS GP.

All adults on SCA need a consultant review every 12 months to assess their suitability to continue taking medication.

If your child is under SCA our Consultant paediatrician will need to see the child every 6 months to assess their suitability to continue taking medication.
