Private Hay Fever Treatments for Kids in Birmingham
Home > Private Hay Fever Treatments for Kids in Birmingham
At our private allergy clinic, we provide a range of hay fever treatments for kids. Approximately 30% of children experience hay fever symptoms, and this is often alongside other allergies such as asthma, eczema, or food allergies. We know just how debilitating these symptoms can be.
Hay fever primarily targets the nose but it can impact the eyes, throat, sinuses, and ears. Most children and toddlers suffer from seasonal hay fever during spring and summer, triggered by allergic reactions to particular pollens. However, some can find their symptoms persist throughout the year in perennial cases. Our selection of hay fever treatments allows your child to access the right options for them.
Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common allergic condition that affects many children, particularly when allergens like pollen are prevalent. Recognising the signs and symptoms of hay fever in children is crucial for timely intervention and management.
While symptoms can vary from child to child, here are some common indicators to watch out for:
Sneezing: Frequent and repetitive sneezing is often one of children's earliest signs of hay fever. It may occur in rapid succession and can be triggered by exposure to allergens such as pollen.
Runny or Stuffy Nose: Children with hay fever often experience a runny or congested nose, also known as rhinorrhea or nasal congestion. This symptom may be accompanied by clear nasal discharge.
Itchy or Watery Eyes: Irritation, itching, and redness in the eyes are common symptoms of hay fever. Children may rub their eyes frequently or complain of discomfort due to itching or watering.
Nasal Itchiness and Postnasal Drip: Itchy sensations in the nasal passages and throat, as well as postnasal drip (mucus dripping down the throat from the back of the nose), are frequently reported by children with hay fever.
Coughing: Persistent coughing, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms like nasal congestion or postnasal drip, can be indicative of hay fever in children. The cough is often dry and may worsen at night.
Fatigue and Irritability: Hay fever can cause fatigue and general feelings of malaise in children. They may appear more tired than usual and exhibit irritability due to disrupted sleep from nasal congestion or other symptoms.
Difficulty Sleeping: Nasal congestion, coughing, and other hay fever symptoms can interfere with a child's ability to sleep soundly, leading to restlessness and difficulty falling or staying asleep.
Decreased Appetite: Some children with hay fever may experience a decreased appetite, which can be attributed to nasal congestion affecting their sense of smell and taste, as well as general feelings of discomfort.
Dark Circles Under the Eyes: Persistent allergic symptoms, such as nasal congestion and disrupted sleep, can lead to the development of dark circles under the eyes, known as allergic shiners.
Aggravation of Asthma Symptoms: Children with asthma may experience exacerbation of their asthma symptoms during hay fever season. This can manifest as increased coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.
Parents and guardians need to be vigilant about these signs and symptoms, especially during peak allergy seasons. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and to decide on a suitable hay fever treatment route.
The Causes
Paediatric hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, stems primarily from an allergic reaction to airborne allergens like pollen, mould spores, dust mites, and pet danders. Genetic predisposition, immune system sensitivities, and environmental factors such as air pollution contribute to its development. Understanding these causes helps in implementing effective management strategies for children.
Our Hay Fever Treatments for Kids
Hay fever treatments for kids typically involve a combination of avoiding triggers and using over-the-counter medications. However, most children struggle to get relief, especially when their symptoms are severe.
If your child is battling hay fever symptoms, our allergy specialists can assess their suitability for Rhinolight therapy. This treatment provides a gentle yet effective option suitable for children.
Rhinolight
Rhinolight uses low-level light therapy to reduce symptoms by targeting the nasal passages. This is a non-invasive method of treatment, that is suitable for children who are sensitive to certain medications.
The Benefits of Rhinolight
Gentle
Rhinolight therapy is gentle and non-invasive, making it suitable for children who may be hesitant or unable to tolerate other treatment methods like nasal sprays or oral medications.
Effective
It is an effective treatment that targets symptoms affecting your child’s nose, such as sneezing and a runny nose.
Safe
This treatment does not use any drugs or chemicals and does not come with the risk of potential side effects or long-term consequences.
Convenient
Rhinolight therapy is a great choice for busy parents and active children. The treatment sessions are typically short and can be easily integrated into a child's daily routine without causing disruption.
Your child would need to attend for 6 or 8 treatments depending on if their symptoms are all year round or seasonal. These appointments would be within short succession after the initial consultation.
Rhinolight therapy offers a promising alternative or complement to traditional medications for paediatric hay fever, providing relief with minimal risk and inconvenience. It can be combined with other treatments, including antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids, for more comprehensive relief.
It's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before starting Rhinolight therapy. They can assess the child's needs and monitor progress for the best results. Arrange an appointment with our allergy consultants today.
Hay fever can have long-lasting effects on children if left untreated or poorly managed.
Impaired Quality of Life: Hay fever symptoms like sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, and watery eyes can significantly impair a child's quality of life. It can disrupt sleep, affect concentration in school, and hinder participation in physical activities.
Chronic Sinusitis: Prolonged exposure to allergens can lead to chronic inflammation of the sinuses, known as chronic sinusitis. This condition can cause persistent facial pain, pressure, and congestion, and may require medical intervention to manage.
Asthma Development: Children with untreated hay fever are at a higher risk of developing asthma. Allergic rhinitis and asthma often coexist, and the inflammation in the airways triggered by hay fever can exacerbate asthma symptoms or even contribute to the development of asthma in susceptible individuals.
Ear Infections: Hay fever can increase the likelihood of ear infections, particularly in children. Persistent nasal congestion can interfere with the proper drainage of the Eustachian tube, leading to the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear and increasing the risk of infection.
Impaired Lung Function: Long-term exposure to allergens and untreated hay fever can lead to decreased lung function over time. This is particularly concerning for children with asthma or those predisposed to respiratory issues.
Impact on Academic Performance: Hay fever symptoms can interfere with a child's ability to concentrate and participate in school activities. Persistent symptoms may lead to increased absenteeism and decreased academic performance.
Psychological Effects: Chronic hay fever can also have psychological effects on children, leading to feelings of frustration, embarrassment, or social isolation due to their symptoms.
Parents need to recognise the signs of hay fever in their children and seek appropriate medical care. Effective management strategies are key to help alleviate symptoms and prevent long-term complications. Regular follow-ups with healthcare providers are crucial to monitor symptoms and adjust treatment as needed.
We Also Offer Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy, also known as desensitisation treatment, addresses various allergies by stimulating the immune system with small doses of allergens orally or under the tongue. Unlike traditional treatments, it aims to rewire the immune system rather than suppress symptoms.
This treatment option is suitable for allergies like severe hay fever, dust mites, pollen, and insect stings, it's not suitable for food allergies or skin reactions like eczema.
Our team of general practitioners and consultants understand the significant impact hay fever can have, particularly on children with severe perennial symptoms. They conduct thorough evaluations of your child's medical history to identify the most effective hay fever treatment options.
No waiting lists mean you can easily book an appointment at your convenience. At our Birmingham clinic, we prioritise high-quality care, providing exceptional patient service, direct access to specialist consultations, and state-of-the-art medical facilities, all without the need for referrals.
