Flexible Sigmoidoscopy in Birmingham

Home > Private Flexible Sigmoidoscopy in Birmingham

Ongoing bowel symptoms can be unsettling, and it’s natural to feel anxious or unsure about what they might mean. If something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s important to get it checked out.

At Midland Health, we provide access to private flexible sigmoidoscopy in Birmingham, with no GP referral required and appointments available on short notice. You’ll be seen by our experienced general and colorectal surgery team in a calm, discreet clinical setting, with time to talk things through properly so you feel confident taking the next steps.

How We Can Help

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a test that allows us to look at the lower part of your bowel. It can help clarify what may be causing your symptoms and what to do next.

Your care starts with a conversation. We’ll talk through your symptoms and any tests or checks you may have had before. You’ll have the chance to ask questions, understand what the test involves, what it can tell us, and decide together whether it’s the right step for you.

If a different check would be more helpful, we’ll talk you through the alternatives. Our role is to help you understand what’s going on, without rushing you into a test.

Do I Need an Appointment?

Many people aren’t sure whether their symptoms are ‘serious enough’ to investigate, especially if they come and go or have been present for some time. A flexible sigmoidoscopy may be recommended if you are experiencing ongoing or unexplained lower bowel symptoms, and further assessment has been suggested.

This may include symptoms such as:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Persistent change in bowel habit
  • Ongoing diarrhoea or constipation
  • Mucus in the stool
  • Lower abdominal or rectal discomfort

In some cases, symptoms that appear mild or intermittent may still benefit from further assessment. A flexible sigmoidoscopy may be recommended to investigate the lower bowel where symptoms persist or remain unexplained.

Your Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy uses a thin, flexible camera to examine the lining of the lower bowel, including the rectum and sigmoid colon. This can help identify potential causes of symptoms, such as inflammation or polyps. The procedure is performed in a controlled, private setting, with clear communication and attentive support throughout.

If required, small tissue samples may be taken during the procedure and sent for analysis. This will be discussed with you in advance as part of your assessment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your appointment begins with a private consultation to review your symptoms, medical history, and any relevant previous tests. We know appointments can feel overwhelming, so we take time to listen to your concerns and answer any questions you may have.

Your appointment may include:

  • Discussion of your symptoms, concerns, and medical history
  • Review of any previous investigations or referrals, where available
  • Explanation of the procedure and its role in your care
  • Clear discussion of next steps following the assessment

You’ll be supported throughout the procedure, and the results will be explained clearly afterwards.

Preparing For Your Private Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Before your flexible sigmoidoscopy, you’ll need to do a small amount of preparation so the doctor can see clearly during the test. We’ll give you clear, step-by-step instructions in advance, including what to do and when.

Our team is available to answer any questions if you’re unsure about anything beforehand. Our aim is to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible, with no unexpected steps on the day, helping everything run smoothly when you attend your appointment.

During Your Test

You’ll find the test itself is usually quick and carried out with care and respect. Our experienced team will be with you throughout, explaining what’s happening and checking in with you as it goes along.

The test takes place in a relaxed, private environment, and you can let the team know at any time if you feel uncomfortable or need a pause.

Any findings are noted carefully, and if biopsies are required, this will only be done if it has already been discussed with you as part of your consultation.

Your Aftercare and Recovery

After the procedure, you will have time to discuss the findings and what they may mean for you. Most people are able to return to their normal activities shortly afterwards.

Your results will be reviewed once available and explained clearly, along with any recommended next steps or follow-up care. If you have questions after your appointment, we are on hand to support you, ensuring you feel informed and reassured about what happens next.
