Memory changes can be worrying, but you don’t need to wait months for answers. At our Francis Road clinic, we provide private dementia and memory assessments that are fast, comprehensive, and tailored to you.

You can self-refer, no GP referral required, and book your assessment immediately. NHS waiting times for similar services can often stretch several months; we provide a timely pathway so you can get the clarity and support you need without delay.

Should I Book an Appointment?

If you have concerns about your or a loved one's memory, an appointment is required to ensure your assessment is thorough, accurate, and tailored to you.

You should consider booking if you or a loved one is noticing:

  • Memory lapses that are becoming more frequent or concerning
  • Confusion, difficulty concentrating, or disorientation
  • Changes in daily functioning, such as managing finances, cooking, or remembering appointments
  • Any other cognitive or behavioural changes that worry you

Our dedicated team manages every step of your assessment, from initial consultation to investigations, specialist review, and follow-ups, ensuring a smooth, supportive, and efficient process.

Who Can We Help

Our service supports:

  • Adults experiencing memory loss, confusion, or cognitive changes
  • Family members or carers concerned about a loved one
  • Individuals seeking early reassurance or intervention regarding dementia

We welcome self-referrals, GP referrals, and internal referrals, ensuring anyone who has concerns can access our expert care promptly.

Step-by-Step of Our Dementia and Memory Assessment

Our assessment pathway is structured, multidisciplinary, and patient-focused, combining medical, neurological, and psychiatric expertise to give you a clear understanding of your memory health. Every step is designed to be thorough, efficient, and supportive.

1. GP-Led Initial Consultation

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation with one of our experienced GPs. This includes:

  • Taking a detailed history and understanding your memory concerns and daily challenges
  • Cognitive assessment using the GPCOG tool
  • Review of medications and past medical history
  • Blood tests, including full blood count, kidney and liver function, thyroid function, vitamin B12, folate, calcium, and glucose levels, along with an ECG, completed on the same day for convenience
  • Arrangement of your brain MRI at our partner private hospital, which is included in the package price

This step ensures we have a complete clinical picture before moving to specialist evaluation.

2. Brain MRI

Your included brain MRI is conducted at our partner private hospital, with clear preparation guidance provided.

  • Images are carefully reviewed and integrated into your assessment
  • Ensures your specialist has all the information needed for an accurate evaluation

3. Old Age Psychiatrist Consultation

You will then meet Dr Nibha Gupta, Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist, for a detailed evaluation of cognitive and mental health. This includes:

  • Reviewing all prior assessments, tests, and MRI results
  • Conducting a comprehensive cognitive assessment
  • Developing an expert management plan with guidance on lifestyle, support, and any medications
  • Optional nuclear imaging (PET, SPECT, or DAT scans) only if clinically indicated

This step ensures that you receive a thorough, expert opinion tailored to your needs.

4. Follow-Up Appointment

A 6-month review is scheduled to:

  • Monitor your progress
  • Adjust treatment or support as needed
  • Provide ongoing guidance and reassurance

5. Comprehensive Reporting

After your consultation, you will receive a clear, detailed report that includes:

  • Summary of your history and clinical findings
  • Results of all investigations (blood tests, ECG, MRI, ± nuclear imaging)
  • Psychiatric assessment and expert evaluation
  • Clear diagnosis and personalised management plan

Reports can be shared with your NHS GP to ensure continuity of care.

All reports are completed within 1 week of consultation.

FAQ

  • Can I get a dementia test privately?

Yes, our Francis Road clinic offers private dementia and memory assessments without the need for a GP referral. You can self-refer and book directly, avoiding NHS waiting times.

  • What conditions can be mistaken for dementia?

Memory problems are not always caused by dementia. Common conditions that may appear similar include:

      • Depression or anxiety

      • Delirium or infections

      • Medication side effects

A full assessment helps to identify the true cause.

  • What is the typical life expectancy for someone diagnosed with dementia at 70?

Life expectancy varies depending on the type of dementia, overall health, and lifestyle. On average, people diagnosed at age 70 may live 8-12 years, but early diagnosis and management can improve quality of life.

  • How much does a dementia test cost?

The cost of private assessments varies depending on the level of investigation. At our clinic, the full Memory Assessment Package is £1,950, which includes consultations, blood tests, ECG, MRI referral, and a detailed management plan.

  • Can early diagnosis slow down dementia?

While there is no cure for dementia, early diagnosis allows for interventions that can slow progression, optimise health, and improve quality of life. Lifestyle adjustments, treatment of other medical conditions, and supportive care can all help.

  • What is the 12-question dementia test used in the UK?

The UK often uses brief cognitive screening tools like the 12-question GPCOG test, which screens memory, orientation, and daily functioning. It’s quick to complete and helps determine if further assessment is needed.

  • How does a memory assessment differ from the NHS assessment?

NHS memory assessments follow a similar pathway but may involve longer waiting times. Our private service offers the same thorough evaluation, including GP consultation, cognitive testing, bloods, ECG, MRI, and specialist review, all scheduled efficiently without delays.

  • How long does the assessment take?

The assessment pathway spans multiple steps but is designed to be convenient:

      • GP Consultation and Tests: 1-2 hours

      • MRI: Typically 30-60 minutes, scheduled separately

      • Psychiatrist Consultation: 60 minutes approximately

  • How long until the results are ready?

All reports are completed within 1 week of the psychiatrist consultation, ensuring you receive a timely, clear, and actionable management plan.

  • What happens after the assessment?

You will receive a comprehensive report summarising:

      • Your history and cognitive assessment

      • Investigation results (bloods, ECG, MRI, ± nuclear imaging)

      • Psychiatric evaluation

      • Diagnosis and personalised management plan

You will also have the option to share this with your NHS GP for continuity of care.

  • What if the cause of my memory problems is not found?

Sometimes, no definitive cause is identified immediately. Our team will:

      • Offer guidance on monitoring symptoms

      • Suggest lifestyle or medical interventions to support brain health

      • Recommend follow-up assessments if needed

Our goal is always to support and reassure you, even if the diagnosis is not clear.
