Concerns about the shape, position, or appearance of your ears can affect confidence at any age. For some people, this has been a lifelong issue; for others, it may follow injury, surgery, or changes over time.

At Midland Health, we provide consultant-led ear surgery (otoplasty) in a calm, private clinical setting in Birmingham. You can book directly, without a GP referral or long waiting lists, and take the time you need to understand whether surgery is right for you.

Our focus is on careful assessment, clear explanations, and realistic outcomes, so you feel informed and supported at every stage.

How We Can Help

Your care begins with a one-to-one consultation with a consultant plastic surgeon. This appointment is designed to understand what’s been bothering you, assess your ear anatomy, and explain what can realistically be achieved.

We commonly see patients for:

  • Prominent ears: reshaping or repositioning ears closer to the head
  • Ear asymmetry: addressing noticeable differences in shape or position
  • Earlobe concerns: including enlarged, stretched, or split earlobes (often related to piercings)
  • Keloid or problematic scarring on the ears
  • Congenital ear differences or changes following injury or previous surgery

Not every concern needs surgery, and part of our role is helping you understand when treatment may be appropriate.

Ear pinning surgery may be considered when the position or angle of the ears feels more noticeable than you would like. The procedure gently reshapes or repositions the cartilage so the ears sit closer to the head, creating a more balanced relationship with your facial features. Incisions are usually placed discreetly behind the ear, allowing the cartilage to be adjusted without visible scarring. The exact approach depends on the structure of your ears and what feels most important to you, with the emphasis always on a natural-looking result.

For some people, the concern is not how far the ears sit from the head, but their overall size or length. Ear reduction surgery focuses on carefully reducing excess cartilage and skin to bring the ears into better proportion with the rest of the face. Even small adjustments can make a noticeable difference, so we plan the procedure with care and restraint. Your surgeon will position incisions along natural contours where possible, with the aim of refining shape while preserving the ear’s natural character.

Earlobe reduction may be helpful when earlobes seem elongated, heavy, or out of proportion, often due to natural changes over time or the effects of earrings. The procedure involves removing a small amount of tissue to create a neater, more balanced contour. We will use a local anaesthetic and plan the procedure carefully to keep scarring as discreet as possible. The focus is on achieving a result that feels in keeping with the rest of the ear, rather than drawing attention to the change itself.

Ear correction can cover a wide range of concerns, including congenital differences, changes following injury or issues that remain after previous surgery. These situations often require a more individual approach, as the ear’s structure may have already been altered. Surgery is planned around your specific anatomy and circumstances, taking into account symmetry, scar tissue, and cartilage shape.  Our intention is to restore balance and improve appearance in a way that feels thoughtful and proportionate.

For children’s cases, we can offer paediatric otoplasty under day case general anaesthetic via our partners at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Should I Book an Appointment?

Many people hesitate before booking, unsure whether their concern is “serious enough” or worried about feeling pressured into treatment. A consultation at our clinic is simply a chance to talk things through.

In your appointment, you can expect:

  • Time to discuss your concerns openly and confidentially
  • A detailed assessment of your ears and surrounding tissues
  • Honest advice on suitable options, including limitations and trade-offs
  • Clear discussion of scarring, recovery, risks, and expected outcomes
  • Transparent information about costs and next steps

Most patients find the consultation itself reassuring and feel confident deciding the next best step for them.

Do I Need an Appointment?

Our otoplasty consultations are unhurried, respectful, and focused on understanding what matters to you. You might book an appointment to discuss otoplasty if:

  • You’ve been self-conscious about prominent or uneven ears for a long time
  • Ear shape or position affects your confidence in social or professional settings
  • You’ve experienced changes following injury, surgery, or piercings
  • You want specialist advice before deciding whether surgery is appropriate

If you decide to continue after an initial consultation, we will schedule an appointment for your procedure.

Our Approach

Every ear is different, and so is every patient. Your surgeon will assess your ear anatomy, skin quality, scarring tendency, and what matters most to you.

  • Ear shape, cartilage structure, and symmetry
  • Skin quality and scarring tendency
  • Your goals and expectations
  • Whether surgery is best performed under local anaesthetic, sedation, or general anaesthetic

If surgery is the right choice for you, techniques may include reshaping or repositioning cartilage, reducing prominent areas, or repairing damaged tissue. You can rest easy knowing that we always focus on natural-looking, balanced results, rather than perfection.

Pricing

We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Costs vary depending on the complexity of the procedures. A full breakdown will be provided during your consultation. Many minor operations can be performed as day-case procedures, helping you save on time and cost.

What Happens During Your Procedure

Otoplasty is a carefully planned surgical procedure designed to improve the shape, position, or balance of the ears while preserving a natural appearance. The exact technique used will depend on your ear anatomy and the outcome discussed in advance.

How Long Does An Otoplasty Last?

Surgery usually takes around 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the correction and whether one or both ears are being treated.

During Your Surgery

An incision is usually made discreetly behind the ear, allowing access to the cartilage. The cartilage may be reshaped, repositioned, or secured closer to the head using sutures. Where earlobe repair or reconstruction is being carried out, damaged or stretched tissue is carefully excised and repaired.

A supportive dressing or headband is applied to protect the ears and help maintain their new position during early healing. Most procedures are performed as a day case, allowing you to return home the same day once you are comfortable.

Your Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery varies depending on the type of ear surgery performed. Before treatment, we will explain what this is likely to mean for you.

Managing discomfort as you heal

Some soreness, tightness, or sensitivity around the ears is common in the first few days. This is usually well controlled with simple pain relief and tends to settle as healing progresses.

Planning time away from work or school

Many patients return to work, school, or routine activities within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the procedure and their comfort. We’ll help you plan this realistically in advance.

Getting back to your normal routine

Strenuous activity, contact sports, and swimming are usually avoided for several weeks to protect healing tissues and reduce the risk of complications. Your surgeon will advise when it’s safe to resume exercise gradually.

You’ll receive clear, written aftercare instructions before leaving the clinic, along with contact details for our team. If anything concerns you during recovery, you’ll know exactly who to contact and when to seek advice.

Follow-Up Care

Follow-up appointments are arranged to check healing, remove stitches if needed, and answer any questions as recovery progresses. If you need reassurance or advice between appointments, our team is available to support you.

FAQs

  • Is pinnaplasty the same as otoplasty?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Your surgeon will explain the specific technique recommended for your ears.

  • Will my ears be perfectly symmetrical after surgery?

Natural ears are rarely perfectly symmetrical. Surgery aims for balanced, natural improvement rather than perfection.

  • Is ear surgery painful?

Most patients describe discomfort rather than pain, which is usually well controlled with standard pain relief.

  • How long before I can return to work or school?

This depends on the procedure, but many people return within 1-2 weeks.
