How We Can Help

Changes to your eyelids can affect both appearance and comfort over time. People consider blepharoplasty for a number of different reasons, whether it’s for functional reasons, cosmetic concerns, or even a combination of both. Every decision is personal and depends on the underlying cause and your individual anatomy.

During your consultation, your consultant will assess whether eyelid surgery is likely to address your concerns in a balanced and appropriate way.

Your consultation may include:

  • Assessment of the upper and lower eyelids in detail, including skin excess, muscle tone, and fat distribution
  • A discussion of whether concerns are primarily cosmetic, functional, or a combination of both
  • Advice on upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or combined blepharoplasty based on your anatomy and goals
  • Explanation of what improvement is realistically achievable, and what may not be necessary or advisable
  • Discussion of surgical options, potential risks, and how these are managed
  • Outline expected recovery, downtime, and how results typically evolve over time
  • Guidance on recovery, expected downtime, and how results generally evolve over time

Your care begins with a thoughtful consultation. We take time to understand your concerns, explain your options, and only recommend treatment where it is appropriate. You’ll be cared for by an experienced consultant in a modern, private clinical setting.

Should I Book an Appointment?

Many people worry that their concern may not be significant enough or feel uncertain about what the process involves. A consultation is simply an opportunity to talk things through, ask questions, and gain clarity.

In your private blepharoplasty consultation, you will:

  • Review your concerns and medical history with our consultant
  • Receive an honest, expert assessment from a consultant specialising in eyelid surgery
  • Learn which treatment options, if any, may be suitable for you and what results you can realistically expect
  • Receive clear information about costs, risks, and recovery so you can make an informed decision

During the consultation, we will focus on understanding your individual concerns. Our consultants will provide clear guidance on whether blepharoplasty may be appropriate, with thoughtful advice on what could happen next.

Do I Need an Appointment?

Over time, changes to the eyelids can begin to affect appearance, comfort, or vision, leading some people to consider blepharoplasty.:

Common concerns include:

  • Drooping or sagging upper eyelids
  • Excess eyelid skin causing heaviness or reduced field of vision
  • Persistent under-eye bags or puffiness
  • Loose or crepey skin beneath the eyes
  • A tired, aged, or asymmetrical appearance around the eyes

Our role is to listen carefully, explain your options clearly, and guide you honestly toward the most appropriate solution, surgical or otherwise.

Our Approach

Blepharoplasty is not a single, one‑size‑fits‑all procedure. Treatment is planned carefully around your anatomy, concerns, and whether the aim is cosmetic improvement, functional relief, or both.

We offer assessment and surgical planning for a range of eyelid procedures, including:

  • Upper eyelid blepharoplasty: Removal of excess skin and, where appropriate, underlying tissue to reduce heaviness, improve eyelid definition, and, in some cases, relieve visual obstruction
  • Lower eyelid blepharoplasty: Treatment of under‑eye bags, fullness, or laxity using techniques tailored to skin quality and support structures
  • Combined upper and lower eyelid procedures: For patients with concerns affecting both areas, planned to maintain balance and natural facial proportions
  • Functional eyelid assessment: Identifying whether eyelid changes may be contributing to discomfort or visual symptoms, and whether surgery is likely to help
  • Revision or secondary assessment: Advice for patients who have had previous eyelid surgery and are seeking further guidance or correction

Procedures are typically performed as day-case surgery, with techniques chosen to minimise scarring and support smooth recovery. You will be fully informed about what to expect before, during, and after treatment.

Pricing

We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Costs vary depending on the complexity of the procedures. A full breakdown will be provided during your consultation. Many minor operations can be performed as day-case procedures, helping you save on time and cost.

Blepharoplasty procedures at Midland Health are carried out by Miss Sameena Hassan, FRCS (Plast), a consultant plastic surgeon on the GMC specialist register. She has been practising as a consultant since 2021 and brings together a strong academic background with broad surgical experience across reconstructive, paediatric, and aesthetic plastic surgery.

Alongside her private practice, Miss Hassan is a consultant at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and remains actively involved in surgical education and research. Her approach is thoughtful and patient‑centred, with an emphasis on safety, natural results, and open communication, ensuring patients feel informed and supported at every stage of their care.

What Happens During Your Procedure

Blepharoplasty is commonly carried out as a planned day procedure. Before surgery, your consultant will explain exactly what is planned and why. The approach is tailored to your eyelids, facial structure, and whether the aim is cosmetic improvement, functional relief, or a combination of both.

How Long Does A Blepharoplasty Last?

The length of surgery depends on which areas are being treated and whether the procedure involves your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. In most cases:

  • Upper eyelid surgery typically takes around 45-60 minutes
  • Lower eyelid surgery usually takes 60-90 minutes
  • Combined upper and lower blepharoplasty may take up to 2 hours

Our surgeon will explain exactly what is planned for you and why.

During Your Surgery

Carefully placed incisions are made along the natural eyelid creases or inside the lower eyelid, helping minimise visible scarring. Excess skin, fat, or muscle is removed or repositioned as needed. The area is then closed with fine sutures designed to support healing. Throughout the procedure, your comfort and safety are closely monitored by the clinical team.

Your Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery from blepharoplasty is generally straightforward, but it is important to allow time for healing and to follow the advice provided by your consultant.

Managing discomfort as you heal

Most people are pleasantly surprised by how manageable recovery feels. Rather than pain, it’s common to notice a sense of tightness, mild soreness, or bruising around the eyes in the early days. This usually settles well with simple pain relief.

Some swelling and bruising are expected during the first week and gradually fade as healing progresses. We’ll explain what’s normal, what to look out for, and how to stay comfortable, so you feel reassured during your recovery.

Planning time away from work

Everyone heals at a slightly different pace, but we’ll help you plan. Most patients feel ready to return to their work within 7-10 days. Physically demanding roles may require a little more time to allow swelling and bruising to settle fully.

Your surgeon will talk this through with you in advance, taking into account your role, lifestyle, and how your recovery is progressing.

Getting back to your normal routine

Gentle movement can be helpful in the early stages of recovery, but giving your body time to heal is important.

We usually recommend:

  • Light activities, such as short walks after the first few days
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and swimming for around 2–3 weeks
  • Waiting a little longer before returning to contact sports, until your surgeon confirms it’s safe

These precautions are there to support healing, minimise swelling, and reduce the risk of complications,  and we’ll guide you on when it’s right to ease back into your normal routine.

Follow-Up Care

Follow-up care is included as part of your treatment. You will typically have:

  • An initial review within the first 7-10 days, often for stitch removal if required
  • Additional follow-up appointments to monitor healing and recovery

Our team remains available if you have any concerns between appointments, so you are never left unsure about what’s normal or when to ask for advice.

Follow-Up Care

You may start to notice improvement as swelling settles, but final results develop gradually over several weeks. Bruising usually fades first, followed by swelling, while scars continue to soften and fade over time. The aim is for the eyes to look more rested, open, and refreshed, while remaining natural and in keeping with your facial features. Everyone heals and responds slightly differently, with results that settle in a way that reflects your natural features over time.

FAQs

  • Is blepharoplasty the same as eyelid reduction or correction?

Yes. These terms are commonly used to describe upper and/or lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

  • Can blepharoplasty help with heavy eyelids?

It may, depending on the cause. A consultation is needed to assess whether excess skin or tissue is contributing to the problem.

  • How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies between individuals and procedures. Your consultant will explain what is typical for your situation and what to expect at each stage.

  • When will I see the results of blepharoplasty?

You may notice improvements once swelling begins to settle, but final results develop gradually over several weeks. Bruising fades first, followed by swelling. Scars continue to soften and fade over time, becoming less noticeable as healing progresses.
