Our Process

Blepharoplasty is a planned day-case procedure. Before surgery, your consultant explains what is planned and why. The approach depends on your eyelids, your facial structure and whether your goal is cosmetic, functional or both.

How We Plan Your Surgery

Depending on your anatomy, your consultant may talk to you about these techniques:

• Upper eyelid: an incision along the natural eyelid crease, through which we remove or reposition skin and fat as needed.
• Lower eyelid, inside the lid (transconjunctival): an incision on the inner surface of the lower lid, so no scar shows on the skin. Surgeons use it mainly to treat under-eye fat.
• Lower eyelid, below the lashes (subciliary): an incision just under the lash line, used when loose skin also needs treating.
• Fat repositioning: moving fat to smooth the area under the eye instead of removing it.
• Canthopexy: a stitch that supports the outer corner of the lower lid, used in some cases.

We choose techniques to minimise visible scarring and support your recovery. 

How Long Does Eyelid Surgery Take?

The length of surgery depends on which areas we treat. In most cases:

• Upper eyelid surgery typically takes around 45 to 60 minutes
• Lower eyelid surgery usually takes 60 to 90 minutes
• Combined upper and lower blepharoplasty may take up to 2 hours

During Your Surgery

We place fine incisions along the natural eyelid creases or inside the lower eyelid. We remove or reposition excess skin, fat or muscle as needed, then close the area with fine stitches designed to support healing.

Your Recovery

The first few days

You may notice tightness, mild soreness or bruising around the eyes. Simple pain relief usually helps. Some swelling and bruising are expected during the first week, and they fade as you heal. We explain what is normal, what to look out for and how to stay comfortable.

Time away from work

Most patients feel ready to return to work within 7 to 10 days. Physically demanding roles may need a little longer. Your surgeon talks this through with you in advance, based on your role and lifestyle.

Getting back to your routine

Gentle movement can help early on, and your body also needs time to heal. We usually recommend:

• Light activity, such as short walks, after the first few days
• Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting or swimming for around 2 to 3 weeks
• Avoid contact sports until your surgeon confirms it is safe

Your surgeon will also advise when you can wear eye make-up and contact lenses again, and when you can drive. 

How your eyes settle

Bruising usually fades first, then swelling, and scars soften over time. Final results develop gradually over several weeks. We aim to keep your eyes looking natural and in keeping with your features.

Our Clinic

Our Francis Road Clinic is about a 15-minute walk from Five Ways railway station. Bus routes 35, 50, 80 and X8 stop on Francis Road, a few minutes' walk away, and Edgbaston Village tram stop is a short walk from the clinic. If you drive, you can park at Broadway Plaza (220 Ladywood Middleway, B16 8LP) free of charge for up to 2 hours when you have your registration validated at our reception. Please allow extra time for your journey, particularly for appointments before 09:00.

The front entrance has 5 steps. We have disabled parking and lower ground floor access with prior arrangement. If you have access needs, please call us on 0121 769 0999 before your visit.

If you are travelling from further away, your surgery and your follow-up appointments all take place at the clinic, so it helps to plan ahead. Our team can talk you through the number of visits when you book.
