Private Catheter Management

Home > Birmingham Urology Clinic > Private Catheter Management

Living with a urinary catheter can be uncomfortable, worrying or disruptive, especially when issues arise unexpectedly. Our Consultant-led Urology team offers fast, specialist support for all aspects of catheter care, from routine changes to troubleshooting, blockages, discomfort and recurrent infections.

As a fully private clinic, we provide no waiting lists, no GP referral needed, and quick access to experienced Urologists. With NHS waiting times for urology appointments often stretching into weeks or months, we offer immediate, expert-led management to help you feel safe, supported and comfortable again.

How We Can Help

Catheter problems can significantly affect your comfort, mobility, confidence and overall well-being. Many patients tell us they feel anxious, embarrassed or frustrated when they cannot get help quickly, especially during urgent issues like blockages, leakage or discomfort. We understand how distressing this can be, and our role is to support you with sensitivity, professionalism and reassurance.

Our Consultant Urologists take time to listen to your concerns and understand your full experience, not just the symptoms. We look at the catheter itself, the underlying cause of any difficulties, and your wider health needs. We offer:

  • Routine and urgent catheter changes were carried out gently and professionally
  • Assessment and management of blockages, including same-day catheter replacement
  • Support for leakage, bypassing and discomfort
  • Care for suprapubic and urethral catheters
  • Bladder scans to check for retention or incomplete emptying
  • Catheter-associated UTI prevention and treatment
  • Advice on choosing the right catheter size, material and drainage system
  • Guidance on long-term catheter options and when alternatives may be helpful
  • Education and support for carers who help with catheter care at home

Whatever your concern, our priority is to restore your comfort quickly and help you feel confident and supported in managing your catheter safely.

Do I Need an Appointment?

You may benefit from seeing our catheter care specialists if:

  • Your catheter is blocked, bypassing or leaking
  • You experience pain, swelling or discomfort
  • You have repeated catheter-associated UTIs

We support adults of all ages, including:

  • Patients with short- or long-term catheters
  • Individuals with neurological conditions affecting bladder function
  • People recovering from prostate, bladder or pelvic surgery
  • Adults with suprapubic or urethral catheters
  • Those new to catheter use who would like clearer guidance
  • Carers, partners and family members involved in daily catheter care

You do not need a referral; simply book directly.

Treatment Options

Our approach is gentle, thorough and completely tailored to your needs. We know catheter concerns can feel intimate or embarrassing, so we work carefully and respectfully to make your experience as easy and comfortable as possible.

Your care may include:

  • Comprehensive catheter assessment to understand exactly what is causing any difficulties
  • Routine or urgent catheter changes, performed with care and attention to comfort
  • Bladder ultrasonography to check for retention, stones or incomplete emptying
  • Treatment for catheter-related infections, guided by urine culture
  • Assessment of catheter size, type and suitability
  • Recommendations for the most comfortable and effective catheter for your lifestyle
  • Advice on bag types, drainage systems and nighttime setups
  • Support with skin care around the catheter site
  • Practical, easy-to-follow guidance on preventing blockages and infections
  • Review of your long-term catheter plan, including alternatives where appropriate

We focus not only on fixing the immediate issue but also on preventing future problems and helping you feel confident in managing your catheter day to day.
