A Faster, Non-Invasive Way to Get Answers. No Referral Needed.

Living with bladder or continence problems can be upsetting, isolating and frustrating, but you don’t have to put up with it, and you don’t have to wait months to be seen.

At our dedicated Urogynaecology Incontinence Clinic in Birmingham, our specialist consultants help both men and women with bladder, pelvic floor and continence issues every day.

  • No GP referral needed
  • No long NHS waiting lists
  • Fast access to expert Urogynaecology care

Whether your symptoms are new or you’ve been living with them for years, we’re here to listen without judgement and create a personalised treatment plan that fits your life.

How We Can Help

Our Incontinence Clinic can help with a wide range of problems, including:

  • Stress incontinence (leakage when you cough, laugh, sneeze or exercise)
  • Urge incontinence/overactive bladder (sudden, strong urge to pass urine)
  • Mixed incontinence (a combination of stress and urge symptoms)
  • Frequent urination, day or night
  • Difficulty “holding on” or not reaching the toilet in time
  • Leaking after childbirth or during the menopause
  • Pelvic floor weakness or heaviness
  • Bladder control issues after gynaecological surgery

We focus on evidence-based, compassionate care, combining the expertise of gynaecology and urology, where appropriate, to address both the bladder and the pelvic floor. Our goal is simple: to give you back confidence, control and comfort in your everyday life.

Do I Need an Appointment?

Many people feel embarrassed talking about bladder problems and delay seeking help. You might think it’s:

  • “Just part of getting older”
  • “Normal since having children”
  • “Something I just have to live with”

Incontinence is common, but it is not something you have to accept. Symptoms are often very treatable, and the sooner we see you, the more options we usually have.

You should consider booking an appointment if:

  • You leak urine when you cough, laugh, lift or exercise
  • You suddenly need to rush to the toilet, and sometimes don’t make it in time
  • You’re planning outings around toilet access
  • You’ve started wearing pads “just in case”
  • Your bladder symptoms are affecting your sleep, work, relationships or confidence

You do not need a referral from your GP to see us. Simply contact us directly and we’ll arrange a convenient appointment, often far sooner than current NHS waiting times.

Treatments and Our Approach

We take a holistic, step-by-step approach, starting with the least invasive options and moving to more advanced treatments only if needed.

Your treatment plan may include:

1. Detailed Assessment

  • Full review of your symptoms and medical history
  • Examination of the pelvic floor and bladder function (if appropriate and with your consent)
  • Bladder diary or questionnaires to understand patterns

2. Conservative (Non-Surgical) Treatments

  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation and exercises, often with specialist guidance
  • Bladder training techniques to improve control and capacity
  • Lifestyle advice (fluid intake, caffeine, weight management, bowel habits)
  • Medication where appropriate for overactive bladder symptoms

3. Advanced Investigations and Procedures

If needed, we can arrange further tests or procedures, such as:

  • Urodynamic studies (to assess bladder function in detail)
  • Cystoscopy (a small camera to look inside the bladder)
  • Imaging where indicated

4. Surgical Options

If conservative options aren’t enough, your consultant will discuss suitable surgical treatments, explaining the risks, benefits and alternatives clearly so you can make an informed choice.

At every stage, you are in control of your decisions, and we make sure you understand each option fully.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

We understand that coming to an Incontinence Clinic can feel daunting. We aim to make your visit as comfortable and straightforward as possible.

At your first consultation, you can expect:

A Detailed Conversation

  • Time to talk through your symptoms, concerns and how they affect your life.
  • Review of your medical, surgical and obstetric history.

Gentle, Respectful Examination (if needed)

  • A pelvic examination may be recommended to assess the pelvic floor and identify any prolapse.
  • This will be explained carefully beforehand and only carried out with your full consent.

Discussion of an Initial Plan

  • Your consultant will explain what they think is causing your symptoms.
  • You’ll discuss treatment options and any recommended tests.

Clear Next Steps

You’ll leave with a personalised plan so you know exactly what will happen next.

How to Prepare

To get the most from your appointment, it can help to:

  • Keep a bladder diary for a few days (how often you go, any leaks, fluid intake) if you can
  • Bring a list of any medications you’re taking
  • Write down any questions or worries you’d like to discuss
  • Feel free to bring a friend or family member for support if you wish

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-ups are an important part of effective incontinence care.

At a follow-up appointment, we will:

  • Review how you’re getting on with your treatment plan
  • Adjust pelvic floor or bladder training exercises if needed
  • Discuss any test results and what they mean
  • Consider further options if your symptoms are not improving as expected

We aim to support you over time, not just at a single visit. We’ll work with you until we’ve found the most effective and comfortable way of managing or resolving your symptoms.

Take the First Step

If bladder leaks or continence problems are affecting your life, you don’t have to cope alone, and you don’t have to wait. Arrange a private, specialist assessment today and start moving towards better control, comfort and confidence.

FAQ

You can book directly with our Incontinence Clinic; you don’t need a GP referral. Simply contact our appointments team by phone or online, and we’ll offer you the next available slot with one of our urogynaecology specialists. If you have any previous letters or test results, you’re welcome to bring them, but it’s not essential.

GPs can offer an initial assessment, basic pelvic floor advice, lifestyle guidance and sometimes medication. However, continence problems can be complex. Seeing a specialist Urogynaecologist means:

  • More detailed assessment of the bladder and pelvic floor
  • Access to specialist tests and a wider range of treatment options
  • Expert guidance if first-line treatments haven’t worked

Many patients come to us after speaking to their GP, but you’re also very welcome to see us first.

In some situations, incontinence can be considered a disability under the Equality Act 2010, particularly if it has a substantial and long-term impact on your daily life. That doesn’t mean everyone with incontinence is automatically classed as disabled, but it does mean you may be entitled to support and reasonable adjustments at work or in education. If you have concerns about this, we can discuss it with you and, if appropriate, provide medical evidence for your employer or other organisations.

We manage all common types of urinary incontinence, including:

  • Stress incontinence
  • Urge incontinence/overactive bladder
  • Mixed incontinence
  • Nocturia (waking frequently at night to pass urine)

If your symptoms are unusual or more complex, we can perform further investigations and tailor your treatment accordingly.

No, most patients do not start with surgery. We usually begin with conservative treatments such as pelvic floor exercises, bladder training and lifestyle changes. Many people see a big improvement with these alone. Surgery is only considered if simpler options haven’t helped enough and if it is appropriate for your specific condition.

Most assessments and treatments are not painful, though some examinations or tests may feel slightly uncomfortable. We will always explain what to expect, proceed gently and stop immediately if you want us to. Your comfort and dignity are our priority.

Many insurance providers do cover consultations and investigations for urinary incontinence, but policies vary. We recommend checking with your insurer beforehand. If you are self-funding, we will provide clear prices before you go ahead with any test or treatment.

In many cases, yes. While not every condition can be completely “cured”, there is usually significant room for improvement in symptoms and quality of life. Even small changes can make a big difference to your confidence, social life and sleep.

It’s completely understandable to feel anxious, embarrassed or emotional. Our team deals with continence problems every day; nothing you say will shock us. You are welcome to take your time, pause if needed, or bring someone with you for support. Our role is to listen, reassure and help.
