Following recent public figures like Jessie J bravely sharing their breast cancer diagnoses, many are reflecting on their own health. As Jessie said in her announcement, “I’m highlighting the word ‘early.’ Cancer is devastating in any form, but I’m holding on to the word ‘early.” Her honesty is a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection.
At Midland Health, we firmly believe that education, awareness, and proactive care are key to early detection and improving outcomes. Whether through regular self-examinations or advanced clinical screening, knowing your body—and seeking expert advice when needed—can make all the difference.
Start with Yourself: Regular Breast Self-Checks
While professional screenings are vital, the first and most frequent step in breast cancer detection begins at home. Performing regular breast self-checks helps you become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. This awareness makes it easier to spot any unusual changes early on.
How to Perform a Breast Self-Check

Look in the mirror: Stand with your arms relaxed by your sides, then raise them above your head, and finally place your hands on your hips. Look carefully for visible changes such as differences in shape, size, or symmetry. Also check the skin for dimpling, redness, or puckering.

Feel your breasts: Using the pads of your fingers, move in gentle circular motions over the entire breast area, including under your arms and up to your collarbone.

Check in different positions: Some lumps or changes are easier to detect lying down or during a warm shower when your skin is softer.
What to Look For
- Lumps or thickened tissue
- Changes in size, shape, or symmetry
- Inverted nipples or unexpected discharge
- Pain or unusual discomfort
- Skin changes like dimpling, redness, or rash
If you notice anything unusual, try not to panic. However, it’s important to seek a professional opinion promptly to rule out any serious concerns.
