Shoulder-to-Shoulder: The Role of Connection and CBT in Men’s Mental Health

Men’s Health Week 2025 | In collaboration with Alan Dovey, Consultant Psychotherapist (CBT)

Each year, Men’s Health Week shines a spotlight on the physical and mental health challenges facing men today. In 2025, the theme “Shoulder-to-Shoulder: Connecting for Health” reminds us of the power of human connection—and how crucial it is for men to feel supported, especially when it comes to mental health.

At Midland Health, we’re proud to work alongside Alan Dovey, a leading Consultant Psychotherapist in the West Midlands, to support men’s wellbeing. Alan specialises in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a practical and evidence-based approach that helps individuals manage anxiety, stress, depression and more.

Why Connection Matters

Men are statistically less likely to seek help when facing emotional or psychological distress. Yet 3 out of 4 suicides in the UK are by men, and many report struggling in silence. Whether it’s societal expectations or lack of access to supportive environments, too many men go it alone.

This year’s theme calls on all of us to change that. Being “shoulder-to-shoulder” means standing together, speaking openly, and creating spaces where men feel safe to be vulnerable. Whether that’s with a friend, a family member, or a mental health professional, connection can be life-changing.

How CBT Helps

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works by helping individuals identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. It encourages people to develop healthier coping mechanisms and reshape negative thinking patterns.

“In my experience, CBT can be especially effective for men navigating high-pressure roles, trauma, or long-term stress,” says Alan. “The goal is not just to ‘talk,’ but to develop real, practical tools that build resilience and confidence.”

Alan has supported clients across a range of settings—from emergency services to private practice—and consistently advocates for early intervention and open dialogue.

Let’s Break the Silence

Whether you’re struggling with your mental health or simply feeling stuck, you don’t need to go through it alone. Men’s Health Week is the perfect time to start a conversation, check in on a mate, or explore therapy options that work for you.

Let’s stand shoulder-to-shoulder—not just this week, but every week.
