Diet Fizzy Drinks – Friend or Foe for Weight Loss?

Home > Diet Fizzy Drinks – Friend or Foe for Weight Loss?

When it comes to losing weight, sugary fizzy drinks are often the first thing GPs recommend cutting out. But what about the “sugar-free” alternatives? Are diet fizzy drinks the perfect guilt-free swap… or could they still be holding you back from your goals?

It’s a question we hear often at Midland Health, and our private GPs and weight loss specialists are here to share an informed, balanced view.

The Case FOR Diet Fizzy Drinks

  • Fewer calories – Regular fizzy drinks can contain up to 140 calories per can — mostly from sugar. Diet versions are usually calorie-free or extremely low-calorie, making them an obvious way to reduce your daily intake.
  • Better for blood sugar – Sugar-sweetened drinks cause rapid spikes in glucose levels. Diet drinks, made with artificial sweeteners, don’t have the same effect — which can be a positive for those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
  • May help during transitions – If you’re finding it hard to give up full-sugar fizzy drinks completely, diet versions can be a stepping stone towards healthier habits.

The Case AGAINST Diet Fizzy Drinks

  • Not a hydration hero – Water is still king when it comes to hydration. Diet fizzy drinks — especially caffeinated ones — may contribute to mild dehydration over time.
  • Possible craving effect – Some research suggests artificial sweeteners can maintain or even increase cravings for sweet foods, making it harder to break old habits.
  • Overcompensation trap – People sometimes “spend” their saved drink calories on extra snacks, unknowingly cancelling out the benefits.

What Our Private GPs Recommend

Diet fizzy drinks can be a better option than full-sugar versions, but they’re best enjoyed occasionally, not as your main source of hydration. For long-term weight loss success:

  1. Make water or herbal tea your default drink
  2.  Use diet drinks as a treat or transition tool, not a daily staple
  3. Pair smart drink choices with a balanced diet, regular activity, and — if appropriate — medically supervised weight loss support.

Where Diet Fizzy Drinks Fit into a Medical Weight Loss Plan

If you’re actively working on weight loss — whether through lifestyle changes or medical support such as Wegovy or Mounjaro — keeping hydrated with the right drinks will make a difference.

At Midland Health, we offer:

  • GP-led consultations to assess your health and weight loss goals
  • Prescription weight loss injections where clinically appropriate
  • Specialist dietitian support to help you make realistic, lasting changes
  • Regular monitoring and adjustments to keep you on track

We focus on the whole picture — nutrition, hydration, exercise, medication, and mindset. That means even your drinks are part of the plan.
