Our Vasectomy Service

We're committed to providing the highest quality vasectomy procedures. Our team of expert surgeons are members of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and all utilise advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure optimal outcomes and minimal discomfort.

Choose from our two proven methods:

  • Scalpel Vasectomy: A traditional approach with precise incisions and proven effectiveness.
  • Non-Scalpel Vasectomy: A minimally invasive option that reduces discomfort and scarring.

Both methods are effective in achieving sterilisation and are, therefore, highly effective forms of contraception with low complication rates.

In a scalpel vasectomy, the surgeon makes one or two small incisions in the scrotum using a scalpel. Through these incisions, the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles, are accessed. Once the vas deferens are located, they are cut, and a small section may be removed or sealed off. This prevents sperm from entering the semen ejaculated during sexual intercourse, effectively sterilising the individual.

Non-scalpel vasectomy, as the name suggests, does not involve the use of a scalpel. Instead, a special clamp called a hemostat is used to puncture the skin of the scrotum, creating a tiny opening. Through this opening, the surgeon then accesses the vas deferens. Using special instruments, the surgeon then gently pulls out the vas deferens, and similar to the scalpel method, it is cut, sealed, or blocked to prevent the passage of sperm.

Why Choose a Vasectomy?

Tired of the hassle of traditional birth control? A vasectomy might be the right choice for you. Whether you're ready to start a family or simply want more control over your reproductive health, this permanent procedure offers several benefits:

  • Reliability: Say goodbye to accidental pregnancies.
  • Convenience: No more pills, patches, or condoms.
  • Cost-effective: Long-term savings compared to other birth control methods.
  • Peace of mind: Enjoy a worry-free sexual life.

Which procedure is right for you?

Is the No-Scalpel Vasectomy Right for Me?

The choice between the two methods often depends on the surgeon's preference and expertise, as well as the patient's anatomy and preferences.

Who Can Get a No-Scalpel Vasectomy?

This option is generally suitable for most adult men who have completed their family planning. Especially those who are in good overall health and do not have specific contraindications to the procedure.

The no-scalpel method is often not possible for those with bleeding disorders or those taking blood-thinning medications. Any pre-existing conditions or anatomical factors that might complicate the procedure should be discussed with the healthcare provider during the consultation.

Will Any Antibiotics or Treatments Affect My No-Scalpel Vasectomy?

Consultation with a healthcare provider is essential to discuss any current medications, allergies, or medical conditions that might impact the procedure. In most cases, standard antibiotics or treatments prescribed for other conditions should not affect the vasectomy procedure.

What Can You Expect

  • Before Your Treatment

During your consultation for a male vasectomy, our experienced medical team will thoroughly assess your suitability for the procedure. This assessment involves discussing your medical history, current medications, and any concerns or questions you may have. We will also explain the procedure in detail, ensuring you understand what to expect before, during, and after your treatment. Additionally, we will address any potential risks or complications associated with the procedure and tailor our approach to meet your individual needs.

  • On-the-Day Preparation

We recommend arriving at our clinic with a light meal in your stomach and wearing comfortable clothing. Before the procedure, you may be instructed to take certain medications to help relax and reduce discomfort during the treatment. These medications will be prescribed by your healthcare provider and should be taken as directed. Our staff will guide you through the entire process and ensure you are comfortable and well-informed every step of the way.

  • Your Vasectomy Procedure

The vasectomy procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to complete and is performed under local anaesthesia to minimise discomfort. During the procedure, small incisions are made in the scrotum to access the vas deferens, which are then sealed or cut to prevent the passage of sperm. The anaesthetic will keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, and you may experience some mild pressure or discomfort, but it should not be painful.

  • Your Aftercare and Recovery

Following your vasectomy, you may experience some drowsiness from the anaesthetic, so it’s important to arrange for someone to drive you home afterwards. You may also experience some discomfort or swelling in the scrotal area, which can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and cold packs.

It’s important to avoid strenuous activity for a few days and to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for post-operative care. You may be asked to provide a semen sample for testing after a certain period to confirm the success of the procedure.

    Recommended aftercare steps may include:

    • Resting and avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a few days
    • Applying ice packs to the scrotal area to reduce swelling and discomfort
    • Taking over-the-counter pain medication as needed
    • Wearing supportive underwear to minimise movement and discomfort
    • Follow-ups with your healthcare provider as scheduled to monitor your recovery progress.

FAQ

The Procedure

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilisation. It involves cutting and sealing the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra.

During a vasectomy, the surgeon makes small incisions in the scrotum. The vas deferens are then located, cut, and sealed, preventing sperm from reaching the ejaculate.

A Vasectomy Procedure Appointment at Midland Health typically takes around 45 minutes. It is a straightforward, minimally invasive procedure carried out under local anaesthesia.

While vasectomies are generally safe, potential risks include:

  • Chronic pain syndrome (rare)
  • Bleeding or haematoma at the surgical site
  • Infection
  • Persistent pain or discomfort
  • Sperm granuloma (a lump caused by leaking sperm)
  • Failure of the procedure to prevent pregnancy (rare but possible)

The ideal age for vasectomy is typically when a person is certain they don't want more children and has considered other forms of contraception.

Before the Procedure

You may be asked to avoid blood thinners and aspirin for a few days before the procedure.

No, there is no evidence to suggest that vasectomy increases the risk of cancer.

Yes, if you are considering a vasectomy and want to preserve your fertility, you can store sperm in a sperm bank before the procedure.

Complications are rare but can include bleeding, infection, or sperm granuloma.

Follow any pre-procedure instructions provided by your healthcare provider, such as shaving the scrotum area and avoiding certain medications.

During the Procedure

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel much pain during the surgery.

Local anaesthesia is typically used for vasectomies.

Yes, you can bring someone with you to the appointment.

Yes, you can usually have an STI test during your vasectomy appointment.

After the Procedure

You should wait for at least a week before resuming sexual activity.

You can stop using other forms of contraception after two consecutive negative semen samples, which are usually taken about 12 weeks after the vasectomy.

Most men can return to work within a few days of the procedure.

You should avoid strenuous activity for a few days after the procedure. If you need to travel, plan your trip accordingly.

Long-Term Effects

No, vasectomy does not affect sex drive or sexual function.

Vasectomy reversal is possible but complex and may not be successful.

After a vasectomy, sperm is still produced but cannot reach the urethra. It is eventually absorbed by the body.

There is no evidence to suggest that vasectomy increases the risk of weight gain or other health issues.

Yes, you'll still ejaculate normally after vasectomy, but the semen will not contain sperm.

Pregnancy is highly unlikely after a successful vasectomy, but it's not impossible, especially during the initial period when sperm may still be present.

Your healthcare provider will discuss any unexpected outcomes with you and provide appropriate follow-up care.

Some mild discomfort and swelling are normal, but it should subside within a few days.

Yes, a follow-up appointment is usually scheduled to check on your progress and confirm the success of the procedure.

It may take a few months and ejaculations before all remaining sperm are cleared from the reproductive system.

You can resume sexual activity as soon as you feel comfortable, usually within a week or two after the procedure, using contraception until confirmed sterile.

Once a post-vasectomy semen analysis confirms the absence of sperm, usually after about 3 months, you can have sex without contraception.
