How We Can Help

A semen analysis test is designed to measure key parameters that are relevant in male fertility testing and after a vasectomy. 

After your consultation, you will receive a Sapyen Core Semen Analysis test kit. Sapyen provides at-home sample collection kits for lab-based testing. Their results are benchmarked against WHO guidance to provide accurate measures in which you can be confident.

Core Semen Analysis measures:

• Count and concentration: the number of sperm in the sample, compared to the sample size
• Motility: how able the sperm are to move and progress 
• Morphology: checking the shape of the cells
• Agglutination and aggregation: how the spermatozoa move together
• pH: checking for acidity, as this may affect fertilisation rates

Do I Need an Appointment?

Speaking to a GP gives you time to discuss any concerns or questions you have about fertility before you take the test. Your GP will help you understand your options and explain the process clearly, allowing you to proceed with confidence. 

A private sperm count test may be a sensible next step if, for example:

• You’re trying to understand your fertility as part of planning for pregnancy
• You’ve been advised to arrange a semen analysis as part of a broader assessment
• You’ve had a condition or injury that may have affected your fertility

A sperm count test is also recommended after a vasectomy to confirm the procedure has been successful.

What To Expect From A Semen Analysis Test

To begin with, you will book a standard or express GP appointment to discuss your male fertility test. One of our friendly team of GPs will confirm what you’re testing for and make sure Core Semen Analysis is right for you. 

This appointment also provides an opportunity to ask the questions people often hold back. You may be curious about what results can (and can’t) show. Because semen parameters can fluctuate throughout the day, your GP may suggest repeat testing depending on your context and results.

Preparing for Your Test

When you decide to take a sperm test, our GPs will discuss how best to prepare for the test to gain a clear picture of your fertility and sperm health.

You will be sent a testing kit within two days of your appointment. The kit will contain clear instructions for collecting your sperm sample and returning it safely to the Sapyen laboratory, where it will be tested within three days.

Getting Your Results

After the laboratory has processed your sample, they will send a report to our clinic for us to share with you, usually within 5-7 working days. We will explain the results and their implications, and discuss some possible next steps.
