Does My Child Need an Appointment?

As a parent, you want the best for your child and especially their health. If your child is dealing with medical conditions such as vascular issues (birthmarks), scarring, excessive hair growth, or skin concerns, laser treatment may provide a safe, effective solution.

A consultation with our paediatric laser specialist can benefit your child:

  • Vascular Issues: Conditions like red spots, telangiectasias, and spider naevi (port wine stains, haemangiomas) can cause discomfort or self-esteem challenges. Our advanced medical lasers can gently and effectively treat these issues, helping your child feel more confident and comfortable in their skin.
  • Excessive Hair Growth: If your child is experiencing excessive or abnormal hair growth due to endocrine disorders or early puberty, it's important to address it as early as possible. Our laser hair removal treatments are medically focused, targeting underlying health causes rather than cosmetic appearance, ensuring your child’s well-being comes first.
  • Scar Treatment: Whether your child has keloid, hypertrophic, or red scars, laser treatment can significantly reduce (improve) the appearance of scars and promote better healing. This not only helps with the physical appearance but can also alleviate any associated discomfort, improving your child’s overall quality of life. Laser treatment can also improve acne scars.
  • Active Acne & Rosacea: Laser therapy is an effective way to manage and treat active acne and rosacea in children, helping to prevent future flare-ups and reduce the severity of current outbreaks. This approach can provide lasting relief and improve skin health over time.

Our laser treatments are safe, precisely targeted, and designed to offer long-term relief for medical conditions like these. Our expert paediatric laser consultant will assess your child’s individual needs and recommend the most appropriate treatment, ensuring the best possible outcome for their health and wellbeing.

How We Can Help

Following an initial consultation, Dr Ramesh Vidyadharan, our highly experienced paediatric laser consultant, will discuss the best course of action for your child.

Laser therapy can offer significant improvements to the following conditions, enhancing your child's quality of life:

  • Vascular Lesions: Red spots, spider naevi, and telangiectasias
  • Active Acne and Rosacea: Laser therapy for managing outbreaks
  • Hair Removal: Treatment for excessive hair growth in children due to endocrine disorders or in older children (13+ years) for medically indicated reasons.
  • Scar Management: Treatment for hypertrophic and keloid scars, acne scars as well as reducing redness in scars
  • Port Wine Stains: Laser treatment for vascular birthmarks and related conditions
  • Haemangioma Remnants: Treatment for remnants of haemangiomas in older children

Age Restrictions

Laser treatments are offered to children aged 8 years and older. For hair removal specifically, we offer treatment to those aged 13 and above, in cases of medical conditions like excessive hair growth due to endocrine disorders.

Please note that this is not a cosmetic service; it is strictly for medical purposes. Treatments are performed with utmost care, often under local anaesthetic to ensure the child’s comfort and safety.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Appointment

The first step is an in-depth consultation. During this appointment, Dr Ramesh will:

  • History

Discuss your child’s medical history, including any current conditions, allergies, medications, and immunisation status.

  • Assessment

Assess the skin type and suitability for laser treatment.

  • Discuss

Discuss alternative treatments and precautions to take before and after the procedure.

For children with excessive body or facial hair, we will also evaluate potential endocrine causes for hair growth to ensure we are treating the root cause before proceeding with laser hair removal.

FAQ

  • What is a Paediatric Laser Consultant Specialist?

A Paediatric Laser Consultant Specialist is a medical professional who specialises in using laser treatments to address various conditions in children, such as birthmarks, vascular malformations, scars, and certain skin conditions. They have expertise in applying lasers in a way that’s safe for children’s sensitive skin and growing bodies.

  • Why would my child need to see a Paediatric Laser Consultant?

Your child may be referred to a Paediatric Laser Consultant if they have conditions that might benefit from laser treatments, including:

      • Birthmarks (such as hemangiomas or port-wine stains)

      • Scarring from injuries or surgeries

      • Vascular conditions (like vascular malformations)

      • Skin discolouration or lesions

      • Eye conditions (like strabismus or certain types of retinopathy), however, these conditions are treated by our paediatric eye specialist.

The specialist will assess whether laser treatment is the most appropriate option for your child’s condition.

  • How does laser treatment work for children?

Laser treatments use focused light to target specific areas of the skin or tissue. The laser energy helps to break down abnormal tissue (such as blood vessels, pigmented areas, or scar tissue) without damaging surrounding areas. In children, laser treatments are usually non-invasive, and the procedure is typically quick and efficient.

  • Is laser treatment safe for my child?

Yes, laser treatment is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified Paediatric Laser Consultant. The lasers used are specifically chosen for paediatric skin and are designed to minimise discomfort and risks. However, every child is unique, so your specialist will discuss any potential risks based on your child’s specific condition and health.

  • What are the benefits of paediatric laser treatments?

      • Non-Invasive: Most treatments don’t require incisions or stitches.

      • Minimal Downtime: Most children can resume normal activities soon after treatment.

      • Precise: Laser therapy targets specific areas, reducing the impact on surrounding tissue.

      • Effective: Many conditions respond well to laser treatments, leading to significant cosmetic or functional improvements.

  • What should I expect during the appointment?

Your child will likely undergo an initial consultation, during which the Paediatric Laser Consultant will evaluate the condition. This may involve:

      • A physical examination

      • A discussion of your child’s medical history

      • A treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs

If laser treatment is recommended, the specialist will explain the procedure, aftercare, and any follow-up steps. In some cases, a patch test or a smaller trial treatment may be done to ensure your child’s skin reacts well.

  • Will my child feel pain during the procedure?

Laser treatments are generally well-tolerated by children, but some discomfort is possible, especially in sensitive areas. The specialist may use a numbing cream or local anaesthesia to minimise pain. In some cases, cool air or cooling gels may also be used to help alleviate discomfort during the procedure.

  • How long will the treatment take?

Laser treatments are usually quick, often taking just 15-30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. However, the length of the session can vary based on your child’s condition and the number of areas needing treatment.

  • Are there any side effects?

Side effects are typically mild and may include redness, swelling, or slight discomfort at the treatment site. In rare cases, there may be bruising or temporary changes in skin pigmentation. Your specialist will provide specific instructions on how to care for your child’s skin post-treatment to minimise side effects.

  • How many treatments will my child need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the condition being treated and how your child responds. Some conditions may improve after just one session, while others may require multiple treatments spaced a few weeks apart. Your Paediatric Laser Consultant will discuss the expected treatment timeline during the consultation.

  • What should I do to prepare for the appointment?

    • Before the appointment: Make sure to provide a full medical history for your child, including any allergies, past treatments, or skin sensitivities.
    • During the treatment: Dress your child in comfortable, loose clothing to easily access the treatment area. Please avoid wearing makeup to the appointment and be prepared to remove all makeup while attending.
    • After the treatment: Follow the aftercare instructions carefully. This may include moisturising the treated area, avoiding sun exposure, and preventing the child from scratching or picking at the skin.
  • Will the treatment leave scars?

Laser treatments are designed to minimise scarring, but depending on the condition being treated, some residual changes in the skin may occur. Most children experience minimal scarring or none at all, especially when the treatment is administered by a skilled Paediatric Laser Consultant.

  • Will my child need follow-up visits?

Yes, follow-up visits may be necessary to monitor progress, evaluate how the skin is healing, and determine if additional treatments are required. The specialist will let you know the appropriate schedule for these visits.
