Acupuncture is a practice that dates back over 3000 years and is known as an effective method for treating and preventing pain. Acupuncture in now increasingly being used in Western Medicine with a growing scientific base supporting its use. .The underlying principle of acupuncture revolves around the concept of energy flow within the body through a network of channels. When these energy pathways are obstructed, it can lead to ailments, pain, or fatigue. Acupuncture leverages fine needles inserted at precise points to enhance energy circulation, thus alleviating pain and promoting the body's natural healing mechanisms. At our private clinic in Birmingham, we offer acupuncture therapy as a branch of our physiotherapy medicine. Led by our experienced physiotherapist, you can rest assured that your pain management is in very safe hands. Arrange a Physiotherapy Consultation or a Women's Health Assessment today to start your personalised acupuncture treatment plan (your acupuncture appointment will be a follow up).
The primary goal of acupuncture is to enhance a patient's general well-being, emphasising a holistic approach rather than solely addressing isolated symptoms. It works by triggering the body to generate endorphins and oxytocin, natural chemicals that alleviate pain and stress. It can potentially enhance sleep by prompting the body to release melatonin and foster a sense of well-being by promoting serotonin release. Additionally, acupuncture activates nerve fibres to inhibit pain signals and diminish the sensitivity of tender points in the body.
Acupuncture primarily aims to alleviate discomfort linked to a diverse range of complaints, including:
During your first session at our Birmingham clinic, our proficient and Registered Physiotherapist who is trained in the use of acupuncture, Charlotte Owen, will carry out a detailed assessment of your concerns. Initially, there will be a discussion about your medical background to pinpoint the sources of your discomfort or any underlying imbalances. The consultation will also involve a physical assessment to determine the cause of your symptoms.
If Charlotte is happy that acupuncture would be a beneficial treatment for you, you will be asked to complete a consent form.
The number of needles utilised will depend on your specific condition and symptoms, typically ranging from 1 to 10 in your initial session. These will be carefully inserted into the skin by a qualified professional, either directly at the locations of discomfort, away from those areas, or a mix of both. Typically, the needles remain in place for a few seconds to about 30 minutes. Throughout the treatment, your physiotherapist may gently rotate the needles to stimulate the area.
In some cases, electrical impulses may be used to enhance the stimulation of the needles, a technique referred to as electro-acupuncture. At the end of the session, the needles are removed, and you'll be advised to rest for a few minutes before departing.
To prepare for your session, it's advisable to eat a meal within the two hours leading up to the appointment. This helps maintain stable blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of feeling lightheaded during the session.
The number of sessions varies from patient to patient. While some may find relief after just one or two sessions, others may need a series of 6-10 treatments. Certain individuals might choose occasional treatments as needed. The precise number of sessions will be tailored based on your condition and your physiotherapist's evaluation, and the treatments will be adjusted based on your response to the treatment. Generally, it becomes apparent after about 3 sessions whether acupuncture is beneficial and if the treatment should be continued.
Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine and flexible. The needling process is usually swift, with some individuals experiencing a fleeting sensation at the acupuncture point, often described as a dull ache, tingling, or a gentle pulling sensation.
