What is a Fibroscan?

A fibroscan is a specialised type of ultrasound that measures the stiffness and inflammation of the liver. Unlike standard ultrasounds, which primarily provide images of the liver, a fibroscan offers vital readings that give a deeper insight into the liver's condition.

This non-invasive procedure is quick, painless, and highly accurate, allowing for the early detection and monitoring of liver diseases, including fibrosis and cirrhosis.

Why Opt for a Fibroscan Referral?

  • Comprehensive Analysis: While standard blood tests and traditional ultrasounds offer valuable information, they may not capture the complete picture of your liver health. A fibroscan delivers detailed measurements that can more accurately assess liver stiffness and inflammation, providing a superior risk assessment for liver-related conditions.
  • Early Detection and Monitoring: Early identification of liver issues is key to effective management and treatment. A fibroscan can detect changes in the liver that other tests might miss, enabling timely intervention and better outcomes.
  • Non-Invasive and Quick: The procedure is simple, fast, and does not require any downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately after the scan.

How We Can Help

Our goal is to provide you with the best care through accurate, non-invasive, and timely assessments of your liver health. With a fibroscan referral, you can benefit from:

  • Accurate Assessment of Liver Fibrosis: We can refer you for a liver fibroscan to accurately detect and stage liver fibrosis (scarring), especially if you have chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), or alcoholic liver disease.
  • Monitoring Chronic Liver Conditions: If you have a known liver condition, our referral can help you monitor the progression or regression of liver fibrosis over time, ensuring you receive the most appropriate and effective care.
  • Evaluating Treatment Effectiveness: A fibroscan can evaluate the effectiveness of your current treatments, helping your healthcare provider make informed decisions about continuing, changing, or stopping your treatment plan.
  • Non-Invasive Alternative to Liver Biopsy: We offer referrals as a non-invasive alternative to a liver biopsy. This test is less painful, carries fewer risks, and requires minimal recovery time.
  • Pre-Transplant Assessment: For those being evaluated for liver transplantation, our referral for a liver fibroscan provides crucial information about the extent of liver damage and the urgency of the transplant need.
  • Routine Screening for High-Risk Individuals: If you are at high risk for liver disease due to factors like metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, or a family history of liver disease, we can refer you for regular liver fibroscans as part of your routine screening to catch any liver issues early.

Attending Your Liver Fibroscan

During your fibroscan, you will lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head. A healthcare professional will apply a gel to your skin over the liver area to ensure good contact with the probe.

The probe, which is similar to an ultrasound transducer, will be placed against your skin. It emits a series of painless, low-frequency sound waves into the liver. The procedure usually lasts about 10 to 15 minutes, and the results are typically available immediately after the scan.

How Should I Prepare for a Fibroscan?

Preparation for a fibroscan is minimal but important for accurate results. You should avoid eating or drinking anything (except water) for at least 2 to 3 hours before the procedure as the presence of food or liquids in the stomach can affect the accuracy of the scan. You should also wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to the right side of your abdomen.

Is Any Aftercare Needed?

There is no specific aftercare required following a fibroscan. The procedure is quick, non-invasive, and generally free of side effects. You can resume your normal activities, including eating and drinking, immediately after the scan. If you have any concerns or experience any unusual symptoms following the procedure, it's advisable to contact your healthcare provider for further advice.

FAQ

A fibroscan is a non-invasive medical test used to assess the stiffness of the liver. It employs transient elastography technology, which uses ultrasound waves to measure liver fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fatty change). This test helps in diagnosing and monitoring liver conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis, providing valuable information without the need for a liver biopsy.

We offer private fibroscan referral appointments from £374

Yes, it is possible to have a fibroscan without a referral from a GP; however, for insurance purposes, for your treatment to be covered a letter from your doctor is required.

No, these scans are available on the NHS, but there are significant waiting lists. You can expect to wait 18 weeks or longer from the date of your NHS doctor’s appointment to receive your fibroscan referral. With our private appointments available on a same-day and next-day basis, it is much quicker for you to receive a date from the hospital to attend your scan.

Our process is quick and easy. All you need to do is click this link and choose the next available slot to see our liver specialists. You will then receive an assessment to ensure a liver fibroscan is the best course of action for you. If our medical professional agrees, they will provide you with your referral to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

A liver fibroscan is primarily used to detect and quantify liver fibrosis, which is the scarring of liver tissue. This non-invasive test measures liver stiffness and can help diagnose various liver conditions, including fatty liver disease (NAFLD and NASH), chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, and other conditions that lead to fibrosis and cirrhosis. By assessing liver stiffness, the fibroscan provides valuable information about the extent of liver damage and can be used to monitor disease progression or response to treatment.

Yes, a fibroscan can aid in the diagnosis of cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is characterised by significant scarring and increased stiffness of the liver. The fibroscan measures the elasticity of the liver tissue, and higher stiffness values often correlate with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. While a fibroscan is a useful tool in identifying cirrhosis, it is typically used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods, such as blood tests, imaging studies, and sometimes a liver biopsy, to confirm the diagnosis.

The progression of liver fibrosis to cirrhosis can vary widely among individuals and depends on several factors, including the underlying cause of liver disease, the presence of ongoing liver injury (such as from alcohol consumption or viral hepatitis), and individual patient characteristics. In some cases, fibrosis can progress to cirrhosis over several years or even decades. However, in conditions like chronic hepatitis C or heavy alcohol use, the progression can be more rapid, occurring over a few years if the disease is left untreated or unmanaged.

Liver stiffness refers to the rigidity or elasticity of the liver tissue. Increased liver stiffness is usually a sign of fibrosis or scarring, which occurs as a result of chronic liver injury from various causes, such as viral hepatitis, alcohol abuse, or fatty liver disease. The Fibroscan measures this stiffness to assess the extent of liver damage. Healthy liver tissue is generally soft and elastic, while diseased liver tissue becomes stiffer due to the accumulation of fibrous scar tissue.

In some cases, liver stiffness can be reversed if the underlying cause of liver damage is effectively treated and further injury is prevented. For instance, antiviral treatments for hepatitis B or C, lifestyle changes such as abstaining from alcohol, losing weight, and managing conditions like diabetes can lead to a reduction in liver stiffness. However, the extent of reversibility depends on the severity and duration of the liver damage. Advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis is less likely to be fully reversible, but early stages of fibrosis may improve significantly with appropriate intervention.

Liver fibrosis can significantly impact life expectancy, particularly if it progresses to cirrhosis or leads to complications such as liver failure, portal hypertension, or liver cancer. The extent of fibrosis and the underlying cause of liver disease are critical factors in determining prognosis. Early-stage fibrosis with effective treatment and lifestyle modifications can stabilise or even improve, potentially resulting in a normal life expectancy. However, advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis often requires more intensive management and carries a higher risk of life-threatening complications, which can shorten life expectancy. Regular monitoring and medical care are essential to manage the condition and mitigate risks.
