The DTP vaccine protects against the following diseases;

Diphtheria – A severe infection of the throat that can block airways and cause significant breathing difficulty.

Tetanus – A toxin-inducing nerve-disease caused by bacteria contaminating an open wound.

Polio – An infectious disease caused by the Poliovirus resulting in muscle weakness and an inability to move.

The combined DTP vaccination is routinely offered on an immunisation schedule of 5 injections at ages 2, 4, 6 and 15 months, then again between 4 -6 years. A booster is available for children aged 11 – 12 or for those who have not previously received treatment. The DTP vaccine is also recommended for women in the second half of all pregnancies to protect against whooping cough. Tetanus boosters maybe required after some types of injuries or if you are travelling to certain countries.
