Strike Out Stigma this World Diabetes Day 2025

Home > Strike Out Stigma this World Diabetes Day 2025

14 November 2025 marks World Diabetes Day, a global event that brings millions together to raise awareness of diabetes, advocate for better care, and support those living with the condition.

This year’s message is clear and powerful:

“Stigma causes harm, wherever it comes from.”

And that’s not ok. Because blame and judgement stop people getting the support and care they deserve.

At Midland Health, we believe that everyone living with diabetes deserves understanding, compassion, and access to the right healthcare — free from stigma and stereotypes.

Why stigma matters

Stigma around diabetes can appear in many forms — from unkind jokes to assumptions about diet, lifestyle, or personal responsibility. These misconceptions can make people feel judged or isolated, and may even stop them from seeking help or managing their condition effectively.

But diabetes is a complex condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age or background. It’s not caused by a single behaviour, and it’s never something to be ashamed of.

The facts about diabetes in the UK

It’s estimated that 1 in 16 people in the UK have diabetes — that’s around 4.3 million people — and a significant proportion of those are thought to be undiagnosed.

Diabetes can lead to serious health complications if left unmanaged, including heart disease, kidney damage, and vision problems. That’s why early detection and regular monitoring are so important.

If you’re concerned about your risk, it’s a good idea to book an appointment with your GP or with Midland Health. This will ensure you receive the guidance, support, and tests you need to understand your risk, manage your health, and take positive steps forward.

Words matter — let’s Strike Out Stigma

This #WorldDiabetesDay, we’re joining the campaign to Strike Out Stigma — by challenging the common misconceptions and hurtful comments that people with diabetes face every day.

Because it’s not “just a comment” or “just a joke.” Our words matter.

They can make someone feel seen, supported, and understood — or make them feel excluded.

Together, we can create a culture where people living with diabetes are respected, empowered, and free from stigma.
