COVID-19 Test to Release for Travel FAQS

Since 15th December 2020, you can opt in to take part in the Government Test to Release scheme.

The Test to Release scheme is a voluntary programme, applicable to international arrivals to England from any location outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. The programme is not available for people arriving from countries that have been banned for travel.

You are allowed to book a private COVID test for travel after five full days of isolation and if your results come back negative, you can end your quarantine early.

Arrivals from outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man are subject to a 10-day quarantine.

To end the self-isolation period early (after a minimum of five full days), you must opt into the Test to Release scheme and have a negative test result. If you test positive, you must stay home for the full 10 days.

Your desire to be tested under the scheme must be expressed in the passenger locator form filled before travelling to the UK. This is why you should book your private COVID test before you travel, as details of your booking will be required on the form.

Both adults and children in your household will have to be tested individually if they want to stop self-isolating early.

If you change your mind and decide you want to get tested under the TTR scheme after you have entered England, you will have to fill in a new form.

TTR tests can be performed only by accredited private COVID test providers. Midland Health holds SLA certification, which qualifies us to carry out COVID test for travel under the Scheme.

You can choose to go to any certified private COVID testing facility and you are allowed to leave your designated place of quarantine to do so. Midland Health is a trusted provider of fast and reliable results for the West Midlands and Manchester areas.

Please stay safe when travelling to your TTR test appointment, avoid public transport when possible and follow the COVID safety guidelines.

You can arrange for a COVID test for travel appointment under the Test to Release scheme after a minimum of five full days from your arrival from any location outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man (excluding travel ban locations).

You cannot end quarantine early if you have not expressed your willingness to participate in the TTR programme on your passenger locator form.

You can have one of three results on your COVID test for travel:

  • Negative COVID-19 test result = You can stop quarantining immediately
  • Positive COVID-19 test result = If you test positive for COVID-19 you must stay in self-isolation for 10 days after the day you were tested. Anyone you live with will also have to self-isolate for 10 days.
  • Inconclusive COVID-19 test result = If the results of your COVID-19 test are inconclusive, you can either book a second private COVID test for travel, or you must continue to self-isolate until the rest of the initial 10-day quarantine period.

Opting to do your test with Midland Health ensures you get the fastest COVID test results in Manchester and the Midlands. There are three options you can choose from:

  • Results within 48 hours
  • Next day by midnight result
  • Same day result (if tested before midday)

No, testing negative on a free NHS Test & Trace test does not give you the right to end quarantine early and doing so may result in a fine.

Only an accredited test provider such as Midland Health can offer COVID tests for travel that are acceptable under the TTR scheme.

You must begin self-isolating from the moment you arrive from a destination outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. This means that if you leave the non-exempt country at 11 AM on Friday, Saturday is your first full day.

If you have travelled to a location outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man in the last 10 days, you must self-isolate.

Yes, breaking quarantine can incur a fine. Starting from £1,000 for a first-time offence, fines for further offences can go up to £10,000.

COVID symptoms may take up to 14 days to exhibit. Furthermore, you could be an asymptomatic carrier, which means that you can be spreading the virus without even realising that you are sick. By following the two-week quarantine rules, you can protect people around you, as well as the NHS workers battling the pandemic.

All Midland Health facilities are well-equipped to perform multiple tests at the same time, so you can book TTR tests for your and any members of your household at the same time.

No. As per the latest government guidance, you must self-isolate for the full period of 10 days, if you are travelling from South Africa to the UK. If you are wishing to go to South Africa, however, Midland Health can perform a PCR test and issue the necessary travel certificate.

Yes, we regularly test staff at factories and occupational sites throughout Manchester and the Midlands, as well as across the rest of the UK.
