Do I Need to See an Endocrinologist?

If you're wondering whether you need to see an endocrinologist, it depends on several factors related to your health and symptoms. Endocrinologists specialise in diagnosing and treating conditions related to hormones and the glands that produce them (like the thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, and pancreas).

Here are some key signs and symptoms that might indicate you should consider an appointment with an endocrinologist:

  • Unexplained weight gain or loss
  • Fatigue, sluggishness, or difficulty concentrating
  • Sensitivity to cold or heat
  • Changes in skin, hair, or nails (e.g., thinning hair, dry skin)
  • Neck swelling or enlargement (possible thyroid nodules)
  • Palpitations or a racing heart
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue or sluggishness
  • A family history of diabetes
  • Recent blood sugar test results show elevated glucose levels

Endocrinologists can help with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes management, and also conditions like prediabetes.

  • Unexplained weight gain (especially around the face or upper body)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Darkening skin (in certain conditions like Addison's disease)
  • High blood pressure that’s hard to control
  • Excessive hair growth or changes in skin pigmentation
  • Unexplained headaches
  • Vision problems (due to pressure on the optic nerves)
  • Unexplained changes in menstrual cycle (for women)
  • Infertility
  • Growth abnormalities (e.g., excessive growth or stunted growth)
  • Irregular or absent periods (for women)
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) symptoms
  • Erectile dysfunction or low libido
  • Excessive hair growth in unusual places (e.g., chin, chest in women)
  • Gynecomastia (breast tissue growth in men)
  • Frequent fractures
  • Loss of height over time
  • Bone pain or tenderness
  • Unexplained back pain (could indicate fractures from bone weakening)
  • Mood swings, depression, or anxiety
  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
  • Unexplained excessive sweating
  • Sensitivity to stress or difficulty handling stress
  • Changes in body hair or voice (e.g., hoarseness or deepening voice in women)

If you have a family history of endocrine disorders, abnormal lab test results (e.g. thyroid or blood glucose imbalances), or unexplained health issues that may be hormone-related, consulting an endocrinologist is advisable to diagnose or rule out underlying conditions.

FAQ

An endocrinology clinic specialises in diagnosing and treating disorders related to hormones and the endocrine system, which includes glands such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary, and pancreas. These clinics offer expert care for a range of conditions affecting hormone balance and metabolic health.

You may be referred to an endocrinologist if you experience symptoms related to hormonal imbalances, such as unexplained weight changes, fatigue, mood swings, or irregular periods. Common reasons for referral include diabetes, thyroid issues, adrenal disorders, and reproductive health concerns.

In endocrinology, specialists assess hormone levels and the functioning of various glands, including the thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, and adrenal glands. They may perform blood tests, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures to identify conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, or hormone imbalances.

Endocrinology focuses on conditions that affect the endocrine system, including diseases and disorders related to hormones. This includes conditions like diabetes, thyroid diseases (e.g. hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism), adrenal disorders, metabolic disorders, and reproductive health issues, among others. Endocrinologists help manage hormone-related health concerns and ensure proper gland function.
