Accurate medical imagery is vital for diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (MSK) and upper abdominal issues. However, you often need a GP referral to be even placed on a waiting list, costing you time and stress before receiving an appointment.

Our MSK Scans and Health MOTs in Leicestershire bypass all these delays to provide a clear diagnosis for our GPs and consultants so that they can create your tailored treatment plan. Book online today and see a sonographer at a time that suits you. Your appointment will be based in a dedicated Health Hub at the Breedon Priory Health Club, which is set in over 20 acres of beautiful countryside.

Why Might You Need an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan creates images of the body with high-frequency sound waves. We can scan your muscles, ligaments, joints, some nerves, tendons and other soft tissues to detect issues like tears and inflammation, as well as larger abnormalities.

We also offer Upper Abdominal Health MOT scans. You may want to stay ahead of potential health issues and ensure your body is optimally functioning. This scan can identify health conditions, often before symptoms appear, giving the best chance for successful management. The Health MOT examines multiple organs and vessels, providing a picture of your overall health. The MOT test includes an assessment of the Liver, Spleen, Gallbladder, Abdominal Aorta, Pancreas, Bile Ducts and Portal vein. We will also check your Kidneys, Urinary bladder (full and empty to assess function) and in men, we can measure the size of the prostate gland.

Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound is a non-invasive process that does not use ionizing radiation, making it entirely safe for anyone.

What Happens During Your Appointment

Our sonographers apply gel to the scanned area, which helps the waves transfer through the skin. We will ask you to either sit upright on our examination table or lie down and then use a scanning probe called a transducer to produce sound waves that reflect off the body back to the transducer. The time required for reflections to reach the transducer is measured and converted into an image of the body.

The procedure will last between 10 and 20 minutes and is typically painless. Some patients may feel slight discomfort. The sonographer will wipe off the gel at the end of the appointment.

Getting Your Results

The Sonographer will clarify the nature of the examination and obtain your informed consent before proceeding with the scan. Ultrasound images will be obtained during the examination demonstrating an accurate picture of the anatomy visualised.  Once the scan is finished, a detailed report with the findings will be generated and you will be able to leave the clinic and carry on with your day.

After you’ve had your ultrasound scan, you can expect to receive the Sonographer's signed report within approximately one business day. Additionally, your medical record will include high-resolution images, which can be used for future consultations and procedures if necessary.

FAQ

We recommend that you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that you can remove easily as our sonographers need access to the examination area.

The sonographer will bring you into the examination room and confirm the examination area. Then you will be asked to sit upright, lie face down or on your back on an examination table. The sonographer will apply a gel to the skin, which may feel cold and then place the transducer probe over it. They will move it around the area to create a complete image.

Typically the scan is painless, although you may experience some tenderness or discomfort during the examination. It will last between 10 and 20 minutes, and then the sonographer will wipe off the gel.

The sonographer will talk you through the live imagery during and after the procedure. Then you will receive a signed report explaining the results within 24 hours.

If a follow-up appointment is necessary, we will notify you and arrange one through our reception team.

Ultrasound imaging cannot penetrate beyond the bone cortex. Therefore, bones cannot be visualised. Other imaging options like MRI or CT scans are better suited for displaying bones.

Additionally, ultrasounds cannot produce high-quality images of deep structures.

With an ultrasound, you benefit from a non-invasive procedure that is cheaper than most other imagery options. It does not use radiation, has no known side effects or risks, and is suitable for patients with metal implants and pacemakers. Finally, as an ultrasound is in real-time, it can show the body moving and be used to guide treatments like joint injections.
