Can You Treat My Dry Eye Syndrome?

Our IPL treatment is ideal for patients with lighter skin tones (skin types 1-4). If you have darker skin tones (skin types 5-6), we recommend Lipiflow. This one-time treatment provides relief for 6-12 months and is priced at £500. We're here to help you find the best treatment for your dry eyes.

Our Laser Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome

Our advanced laser treatment uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target the root causes of Dry Eye Syndrome, specifically Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). IPL works by delivering precise light pulses to the skin around the eyes, targeting the Meibomian glands in your eyelids. This rejuvenates the glands, helping to clear blockages and encourage the release of the oil needed to form a stable tear film.

How IPL Treatments Improve Tear Quality

IPL works by reducing inflammation and improving the lipid layer of your tears, restoring stability to the tear film. This is essential for preventing tear evaporation and keeping your eyes hydrated. MGD occurs when Meibomian glands are blocked or inflamed, decreasing the oil in the tear film. IPL opens these glands and liquefies thickened oils, reducing inflammation and enhancing tear quality for clearer vision and long-lasting comfort.

Unlike temporary treatments like eye drops, IPL directly addresses the root cause of dry eye, providing lasting improvements in tear production and gland function. We combine IPL with manual gland expression to optimise results, ensuring healthy tear production and long-term relief from dry eye symptoms.

Lipiflow: Treating Dry Eye in Darker Skin Tones

LipiFlow is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment for dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), particularly beneficial for those with Fitzpatrick skin types 5 or 6. This treatment uses thermal pulsation to apply gentle heat and pressure to the eyelids, unclogging and stimulating the meibomian glands to improve tear quality and reduce dry eye symptoms.

What to Expect

  • Targeting MGD: LipiFlow helps restore meibomian gland function by warming and massaging the glands to express blocked oils.
  • Safe for All Skin Tones: The procedure is suitable for people with darker skin tones, as it does not affect skin pigmentation and provides effective relief without discomfort.
  • Used After IPL Treatment: LipiFlow can help improve the effectiveness of IPL treatment by improving Meibomian gland health through a different mechanism.

You will benefit from:

  • Long-Lasting Relief: Results typically last 6-12 months, with repeat treatments available as needed.
  • A Non-Invasive Treatment: No surgery, no downtime, just a 12-minute in-office procedure per eye.
  • Improved Tear Quality: Reduces irritation and provides lasting comfort.

Understanding Your Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

MGD is one of the most common causes of Dry Eye Disease, found in nearly nine out of ten cases. When the Meibomian glands become blocked or dysfunctional, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to discomfort and blurred vision. Lifestyle factors, such as prolonged screen time and reduced blinking, can exacerbate this condition, leading to irritation and inflammation.

Your Laser Treatment: What to Expect

After you consult with Professor Scott from Edgbaston Eye Consultants, you will begin your treatment sessions with Midland Health. Here you can relax in a comfortable setting while our experienced laser practitioner, Emma Conway, administers the IPL therapy. Most patients report minimal discomfort, and the procedure is quick and efficient.

How Many Treatment Sessions Do I Need?

Most patients begin to notice significant improvements just a few hours after their first IPL treatment session. However, for optimal and long-lasting results, we typically recommend a series of up to four sessions, spaced 2-3 weeks apart. The number of sessions may vary depending on the severity of your MGD.

After completing your initial treatment series, many patients can enjoy relief for up to a year. To maintain the benefits, an annual top-up treatment is usually recommended. During this time, you can continue managing any residual symptoms with lubricating eye drops while the IPL therapy targets the root cause of your dry eye.

Your Aftercare

After your IPL treatment, you’ll receive personalised aftercare instructions to ensure the best possible results and keep your eyes comfortable. While most patients experience minimal discomfort, some may notice mild redness or swelling around the treatment area. This is completely normal and typically resolves within a few days. We recommend using soothing gels like aloe vera to help calm any irritation and applying sunscreen (SPF 30-50) for two weeks after treatment, especially if you’ll be outside.

To maintain optimal results, we advise avoiding excessive sun exposure and harsh skin cleansers for up to two weeks post-treatment. Additionally, you may be advised to use warm compresses with an EyeBag for the first few days after your session to promote healing and improve the function of your Meibomian glands.

We’re here to support you every step of the way, so if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out.

Am I Eligible?

While IPL treatment is generally safe, it may not be suitable for everyone. Our experienced team will assess your individual case during your consultation to determine the best course of action. IPL is typically not recommended for individuals with the following conditions:

  • Active eye infections or cold sores (Herpes simplex or Herpes zoster)
  • Skin conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, or lupus
  • History of cancer in the treated area
  • Recent use of photosensitive medications or herbal supplements
  • Use of isotretinoin within the last year
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • History of keloids or metal implants in the treatment area
  • Fitzpatrick skin type 5 or 6 (darker skin types due to the risk of pigmentation changes)

We’ll thoroughly assess your eligibility during your consultation and provide tailored advice to ensure your safety and the effectiveness of the treatment. If IPL is not suitable, we may recommend alternative treatments such as Lipiflow to address your dry eye concerns.

Your journey to better eye health starts with a consultation - let us guide you through it with care and expertise.
