Our tinnitus assessment package offers diagnostic testing and a management pathway together. We aim to help clarify what is wrong in fewer appointments, with no referral required and no waiting list.
When ear or hearing symptoms don’t settle, a clear, straightforward approach is best. Our consultants support adults with tinnitus symptoms to find answers with as few delays and investigative stages as possible.

Midland Health can accept referrals from a GP for further investigation, but this is not a requirement if you are seeking an assessment.
Our consultant-led assessment is a comprehensive package designed to provide diagnosis and clarity about the cause and severity of your tinnitus symptoms. When we know what exactly is causing the problem, we’ll be able to suggest effective ways to manage symptoms.
We aim to create a calm, supportive environment, where departments work together to avoid delays or unnecessary appointments.
You’ll get a full understanding of what the tests indicate, and what options are available.

We are proud to offer our patients access to the Oto App, a leading tinnitus management tool designed by audiologists, ENT specialists, and psychologists, including our own specialist, Mr Jameel Muzaffar, who contributed to its clinical development.
Oto is a digital therapy platform built to help people manage tinnitus anytime, anywhere. It delivers evidence-based tinnitus therapy straight to your smartphone, so you can continue your treatment at home and make steady progress between appointments.
The app combines sound therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), and mindfulness-based exercises, all scientifically proven to help retrain the brain’s response to tinnitus.
By regularly using Oto, many patients report improved sleep, reduced distress, and greater control over their symptoms within weeks.
Oto is an ideal complement to in-clinic treatment, extending your care beyond appointments and giving you daily tools for relief.
Mr Jameel Muzaffar is an Otologist with over 16 years of NHS experience in ear, hearing, and balance disorders. Specialising in tinnitus and hearing restoration, he holds fellowships from the TWJ Foundation and Royal College of Surgeons. As an NIHR National Lead and widely published researcher, Jameel combines award-winning expertise with a calm, compassionate approach to evidence-based care.

You’ll have time to talk things through properly, including what you’ve noticed, what’s changed, and what you’re most concerned about. Your appointments are structured to support a clear, straightforward diagnosis.
You’ll go home with a clearer explanation of what’s most likely causing your symptoms, and a practical plan for managing them going forward.
The diagnostic audiogram is the hearing test used to assess tinnitus. Our audiology team will talk you through the process, which involves pressing a button when you hear computer-generated tones at different pitches and volumes. The results are plotted on a graph, which the consultant will explain clearly, in the context of your history and symptoms.
Our Tinnitus Assessment is a combined pathway, bringing together expertise from ENT consultants, Audiology and Imaging departments to reduce delays and staged appointments.
Our Tinnitus and Hearing assessments are held at Midland Health's clinic on Francis Road in Birmingham. Situated in Edgbaston, just outside the city centre, our modern, purpose-built clinic is easily accessible via Broad Street, the A4540 or the A456 (Hagley Road). Drivers can park free for up to two hours at the neighbouring Broadway Plaza car park, simply validate your registration at reception on arrival. Public transport links to the area are excellent, with several bus routes stopping nearby on Francis Road and Five Ways station just a short walk away.
What’s included in a private tinnitus assessment?
A consultation with Mr Jameel Muzaffar (ENT Surgeon) plus a diagnostic audiogram (hearing test). MRI is added only if clinically indicated.
Will I definitely need an MRI?
Not always. MRI is used when there’s a specific clinical reason to investigate further, such as if the symptoms appear to be related to your nervous system.
Do I need a GP referral?
You do not need a GP referral to book with Midland Health.
How long does the assessment take?
The ENT consultation and diagnostic audiogram are separate appointments. The consultation is typically 30 minutes. Your follow-up audiogram and results discussion will be scheduled as required.
How does CBT help with tinnitus?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy doesn’t “turn off” the tinnitus sound itself. Instead, CBT can help you manage your responses to tinnitus sounds. This helps with the distress, anxiety, sleep disruption, and constant monitoring that can make tinnitus feel unbearable.
How do you test for tinnitus?
The diagnostic audiogram is the hearing test used to assess tinnitus. You’ll wear headphones and listen for computer-generated tones at different pitches and volumes, pressing a button when you hear each tone.
The results are plotted on a graph, which the consultant will explain clearly, in the context of your history and symptoms.
Can you assess tinnitus with dizziness or balance problems?
Yes, these symptoms are reviewed as part of the consultation and can influence investigation choices.
What if I have sudden hearing loss?
Seek urgent medical care immediately, sudden hearing loss is time-critical.
What happens after the tinnitus assessment?
You’ll discuss management/treatment options and leave with clear next steps, including any follow-ups or onward referrals if needed.
I’m worried about needing an MRI, what should I do?
Tell us in advance. If MRI is recommended, we’ll talk you through suitability and practical alternatives.
