Expert assessment for adults and children following a first seizure or unexplained neurological episode
Experiencing a seizure, blackout or unexplained episode can be frightening, whether it affects you or your child. At Midland Health, our First Seizure Clinic provides specialist assessment for both adults and children who have experienced a possible first seizure or other unexplained neurological symptoms.
Our experienced consultants work alongside our specialist neurophysiology team to provide comprehensive neurological assessment, including an electroencephalography (EEG). By combining expert clinical assessment with high-quality diagnostic testing, we can help identify whether symptoms may be related to epilepsy or another neurological condition and provide clear guidance on the next steps in your care.
Whether you are seeking reassurance after a single unexplained event or require further investigation of recurrent symptoms, our team offers expert, patient-centred care in a calm and supportive environment.
Our First Seizure Clinic is suitable for adults and children who have experienced symptoms such as:
If you've had a seizure, DVLA rules mean you must stop driving straight away and tell the DVLA. After a single seizure, you'll usually need to be free of further seizures for six months before driving again, or twelve months if your assessment points to a higher chance of another seizure.
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a safe, painless and non-invasive investigation that records the brain's natural electrical activity using small sensors placed on the scalp.
The test does not produce an electric shock and is suitable for both adults and children. Depending on the clinical circumstances, recordings may be performed while the patient is awake, sleepy or asleep.
Although an EEG alone cannot diagnose epilepsy, it provides valuable information that supports your consultant in making an accurate diagnosis and planning the most appropriate treatment.
Our First Seizure Clinic is suitable for children and adults who have experienced a possible first seizure or other unexplained neurological episode.
The clinic also provides assessment for people who require further evaluation to help clarify their diagnosis or, where appropriate, support decisions regarding driving eligibility.
If your main concern is a different neurological symptom, such as persistent headaches, memory changes or other neurological issues not related to seizures, our Neurological Consultations service may be a more appropriate starting point.
If you're unsure which service is right for you or your child, our team will be happy to discuss your symptoms and help you book the most appropriate appointment.
Seeing your child experience a seizure or unexplained collapse can be particularly distressing. Our paediatric first seizure service has been designed to provide families with prompt access to specialist assessment in a child-friendly environment.
Our experienced paediatric clinicians work closely with our neurophysiology team to investigate possible seizures, epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Every child receives an individual assessment, ensuring investigations are only recommended when clinically appropriate.
Following a detailed discussion about your child's symptoms, medical history and development, your consultant will carry out a clinical examination and determine whether an EEG or any further investigations are required.
If an EEG is recommended, it is performed by experienced clinical neurophysiology professionals using equipment suitable for children of all ages. The test is completely painless and non-invasive, helping your consultant build a clearer understanding of your child's condition.
Following assessment, we will explain the findings in clear, reassuring language and discuss any treatment, follow-up or onward referral that may be required. Where appropriate, we will also communicate with your GP and arrange referral to NHS or specialist paediatric neurology services.
Your assessment begins with a specialist consultation to discuss your symptoms, medical history and any episodes you or your child have experienced.
Following your initial consultation, our team will arrange your EEG appointment with an experienced clinical neurophysiology professional.
Once your EEG has been completed, you'll attend a follow-up appointment with your consultant to review the findings, discuss any further investigations and agree on the next steps in your care.
Book your initial consultation online for £995. This price includes your initial consultation, EEG and follow-up appointment. Our team will arrange the remaining appointments for you.
Whether you're attending for yourself or your child, our service offers:
We keep pricing clear and transparent so you can make an informed decision before you book.

What is a first fit clinic?
A first fit clinic, like our Seizure Clinic, is for anyone who has had a suspected seizure for the first time. It brings together a consultant assessment and EEG testing.
Can an EEG rule out epilepsy?
No single EEG can completely rule out epilepsy, since brain activity can look normal between seizures. If your EEG is normal but your symptoms continue, your consultant will discuss further monitoring or investigation options with you.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No. Both adults and children can be referred by their GP or another healthcare professional, but you can also book directly with us without a referral.
Will I need to stop driving after a first seizure?
Yes. If you’ve had a seizure, DVLA rules mean you must stop driving straight away and tell the DVLA. After a single seizure, you’ll usually need to be free of further seizures for six months before you can drive again, or twelve months if your assessment suggests a higher chance of another seizure. A consultant assessment and an EEG help establish the likely cause, which informs the position on driving. Being assessed promptly through this clinic won’t change the DVLA rules, but it means you can find out where you stand without a long wait.
Does the Seizure Clinic work with my GP or NHS team?
Yes. We can coordinate with your NHS team and GP around your assessment and EEG, and with your consent, we’ll share a summary of your results so your NHS care stays joined up.
What should I do if I'm having a seizure right now, or think I might be about to?
This clinic is for assessment after a seizure or suspected seizure, not for emergencies. If you or someone else is having a seizure that won’t stop, or you’re seriously concerned, call 999.
What happens if I need further tests?
If your consultant recommends further investigations, such as an MRI brain scan, they’ll explain why, and you’ll be given clear costs before you decide whether to go ahead.
Is this clinic suitable for children?
Yes. Our First Seizure Clinic assesses both adults and children who have experienced a first suspected seizure, unexplained blackout, staring episodes or other neurological symptoms that may require further investigation. Children are assessed by experienced paediatric clinicians working closely with our neurophysiology team to ensure they receive age-appropriate care throughout their assessment.
Is an EEG safe for children?
Yes. An EEG is a very safe, painless and non-invasive test that is suitable for children of all ages. Small sensors are placed on your child’s scalp to record the brain’s natural electrical activity. The test does not involve needles, radiation or electric shocks, and most children tolerate it very well.
Can I stay with my child during the appointment?
Absolutely. We encourage parents or guardians to remain with their child throughout both the consultation and EEG wherever possible. As a parent, your observations about what happened before, during and after the episode are often an important part of helping the consultant reach an accurate diagnosis.
Does one seizure mean my child has epilepsy?
No. A single seizure does not necessarily mean that your child has epilepsy. Many children who experience a first seizure never have another one. Your consultant will assess your child’s symptoms, medical history and any investigation results, including an EEG if appropriate, before discussing whether further monitoring, tests or treatment are required.
What should I bring to my child's appointment?
If possible, bring details of any previous medical assessments, medications and a written description of what happened during the episode. If someone witnessed the event, their account can be extremely helpful. If it was safe to do so, a video recording of the episode can also provide valuable information to support the assessment.
