How We Can Help

Nerve pain is complex, and often chronic.

Neuropathic pain is caused by damage or disruption to the nervous system itself, not by tissue injury or inflammation in the usual sense. Because of this, it often doesn't respond to standard pain relief, and it can be difficult to describe to others. This experience can be isolating.

Our neuropathic pain specialist works with you to build a clear picture of what's causing your symptoms. This could include an underlying condition, nerve compression, a systemic illness, or something that hasn't yet been identified. 

We may recommend a nerve conduction study or similar testing to identify the cause. We’ll assess possible solutions, which may include a medication review and nerve-targeted treatments, as well as physical and psychological support.

Neuropathic pain has many possible origins, and your assessment will be tailored to your individual history. Common underlying causes include:

• Diabetes-related nerve damage
• Damage caused by the shingles virus
• Nerve compression
• Multiple Sclerosis (MS) pain
• Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
• Nerve damage during chemotherapy or surgery

When to Seek Help for Nerve Pain

A neuropathic pain consultation may be particularly well-suited to you if you’ve been experiencing any of the following symptoms of neuropathic pain:

• Burning, shooting, electric shock-like, or persistent tingling pains
• Everyday sensations trigger or worsen your pain, such as light touch, clothing, cold air
• Pain that is present for weeks or months without a clear explanation

You can also access support for nerve pain if:

• You've been told you have peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, CRPS, or MS-related pain and would like specialist support
• You're currently on medication for nerve pain but feel it isn't working well enough, or is causing side effects you'd like to discuss

If your pain is primarily musculoskeletal (joint, back, or muscle-related) without a suspected nerve component, consider our pain management clinic, physiotherapy or orthopaedic services.

If you experience a sudden, severe, or rapidly worsening neurological symptom such as unexplained weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or facial drooping, please seek emergency care or contact your GP immediately.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

You’ll have ample time to explain how the pains started, your medical history and how your pain is affecting your daily life. 

Your appointment will typically involve a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and anything that triggers or relieves your pain. Depending on what emerges, he may suggest further investigations. 

These could include nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG), which assess how well your nerves are sending signals, as well as blood tests to identify underlying causes such as diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or autoimmune conditions.

Imaging such as MRI may also be considered where nerve compression or structural causes are suspected.

Pain Relief for Neuropathic Pain

Our recommendations may also include reviewing your current medications and considering nerve-targeted treatments such as:

• specific antidepressants or antiseizure medications
• topical options such as lidocaine or capsaicin
• nerve block injections
• physical therapy

We will also offer psychological support if we believe this will help you. Chronic pain often takes a toll on mental wellbeing, and support is available.

No treatment will be recommended without a clear explanation of what it is, why it may help, and what to expect.

Before your appointment

There's no need for a GP referral. You can book directly online or by calling us. Our team will confirm your appointment and let you know if there's anything useful to bring, such as previous test results or a list of current medications.

On the day

You'll be seen at our Francis Road clinic in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Please allow approximately 15–30 minutes for an initial consultation.

During the consultation: Your consultant will take a full history, carry out a clinical assessment, and explain exactly what they’re looking for and why. We welcome questions at any time, so that you feel confident in our assessments.

Afterwards: If further tests are needed, we'll arrange these promptly. If an onward referral is appropriate, we'll facilitate this.

Our Clinic

Appointments will take place at our Francis Road Clinic in Edgbaston, Birmingham accessible by public transport from Birmingham city centre, and patients can use the Broadway Plaza car park free of charge for up to 2 hours when their vehicle registration is validated at Midland Health reception.
