Persistent nasal blockage, facial pressure, recurrent sinus infections, or changes to your sense of smell can be extremely uncomfortable to live with, and you may be concerned about the cause.

Our private sinus clinic in Birmingham offers specialist assessment and personalised treatment for conditions affecting the nose and sinus passages. We focus on treatment strategies intended to relieve symptoms and reduce discomfort.

Do I Need an Appointment?

If your symptoms are affecting sleep, work, exercise, or day-to-day comfort, it’s worth booking an assessment, especially if problems are recurring or not improving with over-the-counter treatments.

You should consider an appointment if you have:

  • Ongoing nasal blockage (one or both sides)
  • Facial pressure/pain, sinus headaches, or recurrent sinus infections
  • Loss or reduction of sense of smell (anosmia)
  • Suspected nasal polyps or allergic rhinitis symptoms
  • Snoring or possible obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Nosebleeds that are frequent or difficult to control
  • Nasal injury, swelling, or concerns about shape/function after trauma
  • Sinus pain or headaches with sinus pressure

You don’t need a referral to make an appointment at Midland Health.

How We Can Help

Your care begins with an assessment at our clinic. Your consultant will listen to your concerns, assess the condition of your sinuses and nasal passageways, and explain treatment options.

A deviated septum can cause nasal blockage, dryness, or recurrent sinus symptoms. Assessment includes examination and sometimes endoscopy. Options range from sprays/rinses to septoplasty if needed.

Rhinoplasty can refine nasal shape and/or improve airflow when structure affects breathing. Assessment reviews goals and function. Options may include septorhinoplasty, functional reconstruction, or supportive medical treatment first.

Loss of smell may follow viral illness, allergy, polyps, or sinus inflammation. Assessment can include endoscopy and selective imaging. Treatment might involve sprays, short steroids, and smell training.

Nasal polyps are inflammatory swellings that block breathing and reduce smell. Assessment uses examination/endoscopy, sometimes CT. Treatment may include steroid sprays, saline irrigation, and surgery if persistent.

Rhinosinusitis can cause congestion, discharge, facial pressure, and reduced smell. Assessment considers how long the problem has been present and examines the nose, sometimes with an endoscopy. Treatment may include rinses, steroid sprays, and targeted antibiotics.

Allergic rhinitis causes sneezing, itching, a runny nose and blockage. Assessment reviews triggers and patterns. Treatment typically includes antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, saline rinses, and tailored avoidance advice.

Enlarged turbinates (small, bony structures in the nostrils) can create persistent nasal blockage, often linked to allergy, infection or irritation. Treatment may include sprays, antihistamines, irrigation or, in some cases, turbinate reduction.

Snoring may be harmless, but in some cases there are underlying conditions, such as obstructive sleep apnoea. Assessment reviews your symptoms, airway anatomy, and may include sleep testing. Management can include nasal treatment, CPAP, oral devices, or surgery.

Facial pain could be from inflamed sinuses or from something else. Our assessment explores symptoms and examines the nose, using endoscopy or imaging when indicated. Once the cause is determined, we will discuss appropriate treatment options.

A septal haematoma occurs when blood is trapped inside the septum after an injury, and this condition needs urgent review. Treatment usually involves prompt drainage and antibiotics to protect nasal cartilage.

After a nasal injury, we can check the alignment of your nose, your breathing, and any complications such as septal haematoma. Treatment may include pain control and observation, or a timely reduction if the bone is displaced.

Frequent nosebleeds can be caused by dryness, irritation, medications, or fragile vessels. Assessment identifies the source, and treatment may include moisturising care, saline irrigation, cautery, and further investigation if persistent.

Depending on your symptoms and examination findings, we’ll make recommendations for treatment and explain what you can expect. In some cases, you’ll need more specialist testing. We’ll discuss your options and arrange these with our care partners, so you don’t have to go through another round of assessments somewhere else. If surgery is advised, you’ll be able to discuss all the options with your clinician. Our aim is always the least invasive, most effective option for you.

FAQ

  • Do you treat sinus infections?

Yes. We assess the cause of recurrent or persistent sinus infections and recommend appropriate treatment, including medical therapy and further investigation where needed.

  • What’s the difference between rhinitis and sinusitis?

Rhinitis is inflammation in the nasal lining (often allergy-related). Sinusitis involves inflammation of the sinuses and may cause facial pressure, pain, and blocked drainage. We assess both because they can overlap.

  • Will I need a scan?

Not everyone does. If imaging would help confirm a diagnosis or guide treatment, we’ll explain why and what it will show.

  • When is sinus surgery considered?

Surgery may be considered when symptoms persist despite appropriate medical treatment, or when structural or inflammatory issues are preventing normal sinus drainage. We’ll discuss whether a sinus surgery clinic pathway is suitable for you.

  • Can you help with loss of smell (anosmia)?

Yes. We assess common causes such as chronic inflammation, polyps, infection, and structural blockage, and recommend appropriate treatment and next steps.

  • Do you manage nosebleeds?

Yes. We assess the underlying cause and can advise on prevention and treatment options, including management for recurrent epistaxis.

  • Do I need a GP referral?

No, you can self-refer. If you’re using health insurance, we can advise on any requirements they may have.
