How We Can Help

You may already have a working diagnosis and a referral from another clinician, such as a spinal surgeon, orthopaedic consultant, GP, rheumatologist, vascular surgeon or pain management consultant. You don’t need a referral to book into our clinic; we’ll do our best to help you understand your symptoms.

Who Might Benefit From This Testing?

NCS/EMG testing may be helpful if your symptoms suggest a problem affecting the peripheral nerves or muscles. You may be experiencing: 

  • New or progressive numbness, tingling or weakness  
  • Repetitive strain symptoms 
  • Suspected nerve irritation or injury 
  • Spine-related symptoms 
  • Post-surgical changes in feeling 
  • Tingling or numbness after trauma or injury 

What Are NCS & EMG Used For?

These tests are designed to measure nerve and muscle function, and they’re most useful for pinpointing where the problem is starting. Your consultant will recommend one or both tests for you based on your assessment during the initial appointment. 

Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) 

This test assesses whether there is any damage to peripheral nerves, such as those in the arms and legs, by measuring the speed and strength of the electrical currents they conduct. This can explain whether nervous problems are caused by weakness in the protective coating around the nerves, or damage to the nerve fibres themselves. 

During this test, you’ll have small electrode patches placed on your skin, over the nerve or muscle. The electrodes will stimulate the nerve and measure how well signals are carried from one point to another. 

Electromyography (EMG) 

An EMG test uses fine needles to assess electrical activity of muscles during activity and at rest. This test is used to help understand whether the problem is in the nerve or the muscle. 

What To Expect From Your Appointment 

We know it can feel daunting to book testing without knowing exactly what will happen, so we’ll talk you through each step before anything starts. 

Your diagnostic test is performed by our Consultant Neurologist, so you can discuss what the findings suggest on the day, and arrange a detailed neurology follow-up if needed. 

First appointment: Consultation 

During your initial consultation, your consultant will understand your symptoms and concerns. We may conduct a physical examination as appropriate, checking reflexes and other symptoms. Your consultant will discuss with you whether an NCS, EMG, or both are most appropriate for assessing your condition. 

Second appointment: Diagnostic testing

For NCS: small sticky pads (electrodes) on the skin; tiny electrical pulses to measure nerve response.

For EMG: a very fine, sterile needle electrode placed into the muscle to record activity as you tense and relax.

Testing usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how many areas are assessed.  

Preparing For Your Test 

If you’re feeling anxious about comfort or safety, please tell us. These are normal concerns, and we’ll support you to feel at ease during the test. 

A few small steps beforehand can help your test go smoothly. 

  • Avoid body lotions or moisturisers on the day 
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing 
  • Tell us in advance if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or if you are taking blood-thinning medication 

Aftercare and Results 

Most people are able to leave straight after, and any soreness is usually mild and short-lived. You may notice minor bruising or tenderness after an EMG. 

Where possible, your consultant will explain what your results suggest and discuss possible next steps, and a full report can be shared with your GP/referrer (with your consent). 

How NCS & EMG Testing Can Help 

An EMG or a nerve conduction study is commonly used to assess and help evaluate the following conditions. 

Indicated by numbness, tingling, or pain that may feel like burning, sensory changes in the hands and feet, or unexplained weakness in grip, arms or legs. Peripheral neuropathy may be associated with diabetes, chemotherapy, autoimmune conditions such as CIDP or Guillian-Barré syndrome or vascular conditions. They may also be caused by Vitamin B12 deficiency or alcohol-related conditions. 

These tests are used to assess nervous problems indicated by focal weakness, loss of sensation in a particular area or dropping wrists or ankles. With NCS and EMG testing, we may see signs of:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome 
  • Ulnar neuropathy at elbow 
  • Radial nerve palsy 
  • Peroneal nerve palsy / foot drop 
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome 

NCS and EMG are also used when symptoms and scans don’t fully match, or when surgery is being considered for: 

  • Cervical radiculopathy (C5–C8) 
  • Lumbar radiculopathy (L4–S1) 
  • Disc prolapse with neurological deficit 
  • Post-surgical persistent symptoms 

Often the result of traumatic injury or tumours, plexopathies are neuropathic conditions affecting a plexus or network of nerves, often affecting a whole limb or area.  

  • Brachial plexopathy 
  • Lumbosacral plexopathy 

Nerve conduction studies can help diagnose suspected motor neuron disease (MND) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or other progressive diseases such as Myasthenia gravis or Lambert–Eaton syndrome. These disorders are caused by problems at the junctions between nerves and muscles. 

When muscle weakness is unexplained, we may recommend these tests to assess whether the cause is linked to inflammation, metabolic issues or medication use. We may also test for genetic diseases or muscular dystrophies. 

These tests are useful to understand the cause of functional weaknesses of the muscles or peripheral nerves when exam findings are inconsistent and when we need to differentiate between functional symptoms and neurogenic patterns.

  • How long does an electromyography test take?

    Most appointments last around an hour, depending on how many areas are being tested. 

  • Can you conduct a nerve conduction test on legs and feet?

    Yes; your consultant can test arms and/or legs depending on your symptoms and the clinical question. 

  • Can you fail an NCS test?

    No; there’s no pass/fail; the results show how your nerves and muscles are functioning and help guide next steps.
