Voice Clinic

Home > ENT > Private Voice Clinic in Birmingham

If your voice has been hoarse, strained, or unreliable, it can be unsettling, especially when it affects work, performance, or everyday conversation.

This private voice therapy service brings together the expertise of Consultant ENT Surgeon Mr Jonathan Fussey and Voice Specialist Mrs Carrie Garrett. You will have separate appointments with each specialist as part of your assessment and treatment package, ensuring you receive comprehensive care tailored to your needs.

A Collaborative Assessment For Voice And Throat Concerns

When symptoms keep coming back, it’s completely reasonable to want a clear explanation and a sensible plan.

This multidisciplinary service combines our expertise in ENT and voice therapy. Both clinicians will listen carefully, assessing you for both physical ENT concerns and vocal function, and talk through what the findings may mean.

Who This Service May Be Suitable For

If you rely on your voice, you deserve an assessment that takes your concerns seriously and doesn’t rush you. Our voice specialist service can offer support to:

  • Professional vocalists, such as singers, actors, teachers, broadcasters experiencing vocal fatigue, loss of stamina, reduced control
  • Adults with ongoing hoarseness, strain, voice breaks, or throat discomfort
  • People with a history of breathing, throat, or swallowing issues that are impacting their voice
  • Those exploring possible dysphonia, including muscle tension dysphonia

Important Safety Information

If you experience sudden, severe difficulty breathing, sudden inability to swallow, or are coughing up blood, seek urgent medical care by calling 999 or attending your nearest A&E department.

Conditions That Can Affect The Voice

During your appointments will assess you for a range of voice and throat concerns, which may include:

  • Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD)
  • Benign vocal fold lesions, nodules, cysts or polyps
  • Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and throat irritation linked with reflux
  • Vocal fold palsy, or vocal fold movement impairment
  • The ageing voice (Presbyphonia)

After assessment, we will recommend a personalised management plan to try to improve your vocal function. You’ll have a thorough explanation, so you can make an informed decision about how to proceed.

What To Expect From Your Consultations

You can explain your concerns about your voice to both clinicians. We may ask about when the problem started and how it affects your daily life. Your appointments are designed to be thorough, clear, and focused on getting you relief as quickly as possible.

The ENT assessment by Mr Fussey

  • Review of your medical history and voice-related symptoms
  • Examination to look for structural or medical factors affecting the voice
  • Discussion of treatment options where appropriate

The voice specialist assessment by Mrs Carrie Garrett

  • How you use your voice day to day (work, performance, habits, load)
  • Assessment of vocal function, pitch, quality, stamina, and strain
  • Initial guidance on voice hygiene and practical changes that may help

After assessing your condition, we will discuss our findings in plain language, explaining the possible causes and our recommendations for treatment.

If it is likely to clarify our understanding of your condition, we will recommend further investigations and tests. You’ll have a clear summary of your options, so you can decide what to do next with confidence.
