How We Can Help

A ring pessary change is the routine process of removing your vaginal ring pessary, checking the vaginal tissues, cleaning the device, and reinserting your existing pessary, or replacing it with the same type/size where appropriate.

We’ll take time to understand how your pessary ring is feeling day-to-day, and we’ll talk you through each step of the appointment calmly and respectfully.

Who This Service May Be Suitable For

This appointment is for those who already have a pessary ring in place. These should be changed or cleaned every 3–6 months for hygiene. While some people can manage their pessary changes at home, clinical support helps make this more comfortable and can identify any issues with your pessary.

It can also be helpful if you feel the pessary ring has become uncomfortable, you’ve noticed new discharge or odour, or you’d like reassurance that the fit is still right.

What Happens During A Ring Pessary Change

During your appointment, your gynaecologist will ask about your day-to-day comfort and whether you’ve had any symptoms such as bleeding, discharge or discomfort.

When you're ready, the doctor will then:

• Gently remove the pessary ring
• Use a speculum to inspect the vaginal walls for irritation, soreness or ulcers caused by the device rubbing
• Reinsert a cleaned pessary ring or replace it with a new device, depending on your pessary type and condition 

If we see soreness or irritation, we may recommend you leave the pessary out for a short period to allow the tissues to heal, and arrange a review.

You can expect a private, unhurried discussion first, so you feel heard and not rushed. Most people find the removal is briefly uncomfortable for a few seconds, and we’ll check in with you throughout.

Pricing

This appointment is for ring pessary changes only for patients who already have a fitted pessary. If you require a new pessary fitting, resizing, re-measurement, or assessment for a different pessary type, you will need to book a gynaecology consultation first.
