Private appointments for children and young people
If food has become a daily worry in your home, you're not alone. You can access nutritional support from specialists that take your concerns seriously. Our ARFID specialists support families with assessment, monitoring and treatment for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (AFRID), a selective eating disorder where a child struggles to eat enough, or eat a wide enough variety, to meet their needs.
It can be hard to know when selective eating has moved beyond a phase, especially if you've already tried encouragement, routines, or reward systems.
An assessment may be helpful if your child:
It is worth noting that ARFID is not driven by body weight or shape concerns, and so is not associated with Anorexia Nervosa. ARFID can involve food restriction linked to appetite, anxiety, or food texture sensitivity and other sensory factors.
Our ARFID service is designed to help give you clarity on what may be causing your child's eating challenges and what support is most appropriate next.
Depending on your child's needs, support may include:
Your first appointment may take up to one hour. In that time, our diet experts will have the chance to get a good feel of your child’s diet and any potential feeding issues, so they can offer you advice and guidance on the next steps you need to take. We’ll also send you a letter summarising what happened during your appointment, so you can keep track of your child’s nutritional treatment and progress.

Any investigations or treatment recommendations made during your consultation may involve additional costs, which will be discussed with you clearly before anything is arranged.
We are also recognised by a number of major health insurers. If you intend to use private medical insurance, please contact us ahead of your appointment to confirm your cover.
You will not be rushed, and we will take the time to understand how eating is affecting your child's health and your family life.
Your child's appointment may include:

Is ARFID the same as picky eating?
ARFID is usually more persistent and has a bigger impact on health, growth, nutrition, or daily life than typical picky eating. An assessment can help clarify what is going on and what support is most appropriate.
Can ARFID be linked to autism or sensory sensitivities?
Yes, ARFID can overlap with sensory needs, including strong reactions to food texture sensitivity, smell or appearance. We consider neurodevelopmental and anxiety-related factors as part of the assessment.
Will my child need CBT for ARFID?
Not always, and therapy is never a one-size-fits-all decision. If CBT-informed support for ARFID is suitable, we will explain what it involves and how it would look for your child. Our paediatric CBT clinic supports children and adolescents with a wide range of challenges, including ARFID.
Do you involce dietitians?
Dietetic input can be helpful where nutrition, growth, or dietary range are concerns. If it’s appropriate, we can recommend dietetic support and help co-ordinate this
