Our HAVS Assessment Process
We understand the importance of early detection and intervention in preventing the progression of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). Our comprehensive HAVS assessments are designed to identify potential issues at their earliest stages, allowing for timely treatment and the prevention of long-term damage.
Our Assessment Process
Our experienced medical team will conduct a thorough assessment that includes the following components:
- Medical History: We will review your medical history, focusing on any symptoms related to HAVS, such as numbness, tingling, or pain in your hands and fingers.
- Physical Examination: Our doctor will perform a physical examination to assess your hands, arms, and other affected areas. This may involve checking for signs of nerve damage or circulatory problems.
- Vibration Exposure Assessment: We will evaluate your exposure to vibration by asking about your work activities and the tools you use. This information will help us determine the severity of your risk.
- Nerve Function Tests: To assess the health of your nerves, we may conduct nerve function tests, such as electromyography (EMG) or nerve conduction studies. These tests can help diagnose the extent of any nerve damage.
Personalised Advice and Treatment
Based on the results of your assessment, we will provide you with personalised advice on control measures and treatment options. This may include:
- Lifestyle modifications: We can recommend changes to your work habits or activities to reduce your exposure to vibration.
- Protective equipment: We can advise on the use of appropriate protective equipment to minimise the impact of vibration on your hands and arms.
- Treatment options: If necessary, we can discuss treatment options, such as medication or therapy, to help manage your symptoms and prevent further progression of HAVS.
If you are concerned about your exposure to vibration or experiencing symptoms of HAVS, don't hesitate to contact us for a comprehensive assessment. Early detection and intervention can significantly improve your prognosis and quality of life.

What is HAVS?
Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a condition caused by prolonged exposure to vibrating tools and equipment. Prolonged exposure to vibrating tools and equipment can damage the nerves, blood vessels, and joints in the hands and arms.
This damage can lead to a range of symptoms, including:
- Numbness and tingling: Sensation loss in the fingers and hands.
- Loss of grip strength: Difficulty holding onto objects.
- Pain and discomfort: Aching or burning sensations in the hands and fingers.
If left untreated, HAVS can have long-term consequences, such as:
- Raynaud's phenomenon: A condition where the fingers and toes become numb and cold in response to cold temperatures.
- Bone and joint damage: Osteoarthritis and other joint problems.
- Nerve damage: Carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve-related conditions.
Who is at Risk?
Workers in a variety of industries are at risk of developing HAVS, including:
- Construction: Workers who use power tools, such as jackhammers and chainsaws.
- Manufacturing: Employees who operate vibrating machinery, such as grinders and polishers.
- Forestry: Workers using chainsaws and other vibrating tools.
- Agriculture: Individuals who operate tractors and other vibrating equipment.
Legal Requirements
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 requires employers to assess the vibration exposure of their workers and take appropriate measures to protect them from HAVS. This includes:
- Risk assessment: Identifying and evaluating vibration risks in the workplace.
- Control measures: Implementing measures to reduce vibration exposure, such as using low-vibration tools or providing protective equipment.
- Health surveillance: Monitoring the health of workers exposed to vibration.
- Training: Providing workers with training on the risks of vibration exposure and how to protect themselves.
Preventing and Managing HAVS
To effectively prevent and manage Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), it is crucial to conduct thorough risk assessments in the workplace to identify and quantify vibration exposure. This information allows employers to implement appropriate control measures, such as selecting low-vibration tools, rotating workers between tasks involving vibrating equipment, using vibration-dampening equipment, and ensuring tools are well-maintained.
Regular health surveillance, which includes medical examinations, vibration exposure measurements, and nerve function tests, is also essential for monitoring workers exposed to vibration and detecting early signs of the condition. By combining these strategies, employers can significantly reduce the risk of HAVS among their workforce and protect the health and well-being of their employees.
