Skin swabs

Home > Tests and Diagnostics > Microbiology > Skin swabs

A skin swab is often recommended for suspected infection in a superficial wound; however, it can also be used for abscesses or infections of the throat and ear. A sample is taken from the relevant area before being sent to the laboratory for testing. This will usually be needed to determine the appropriate course of antibiotics based on the bacteria causing your infection.

If a course of antibiotics has not been fully effective or you suspect an infection in a wound or abscess, it may be helpful to discuss a skin swab with your GP. For abscesses, please consult with your GP first. Then we can advise. We cannot guarantee draining in the first appointment. At Midland Health, we understand that a quick and pain-free recovery is the most important, so determining a specific course of action is top priority.
