PRP Hair Restoration in Birmingham

Thinning hair can be hard to talk about, and hard to know what to do about. If you are here, you may have spent some time looking for clear information.

At Midland Health, we offer Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments for hair loss, using a type of PRP called Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) treatments, as research points to more sustained outcomes.

Do I Need an Appointment?

Most people who come to us have noticed a cosmetic change in their hair over some time.

You may have noticed:

  • Thinning hair that feels finer or weaker than it used to
  • A receding hairline or a parting that has widened
  • More hair shedding than usual
  • Thinning around hormonal changes such as perimenopause, or after childbirth
  • Thinning after a hair transplant, where your surgeon has raised PRP with you

Consultant-Led Assessments As Needed

Emma Conway carries out our PRP hair treatments. Where she identifies signs that suggest an underlying scalp or skin condition, such as inflammation, she will refer you to one of our consultant dermatologists before treatment goes ahead.

How We Can Help

Our Approach: PRP and PRF Treatment

PRP and PRF are both derived from your own blood, drawn by a clinician during the appointment. Your clinician will concentrate the platelets using a centrifuge, a machine that spins the sample, before injecting the concentrated portion into your scalp, at the hair roots.

PRF hair treatment is available at Midland Health, using injectable platelet-rich fibrin, or i-PRF. This is a newer form of PRP, prepared without an anticoagulant so the concentrated plasma can form a natural fibrin matrix.

Published research shows that i-PRF holds a higher concentration of platelets than PRP and releases growth factors more gradually and over a longer period.3 Your clinician will explain what this means for your treatment.

Hair thinning is difficult to talk about, and can be emotional for many. We will take it seriously and set out what is realistic for you. You may have noticed hair thinning around hormonal changes such as perimenopause or after childbirth, or during periods of significant stress. PRP is also an appropriate treatment for male and female pattern hair loss and certain forms of alopecia.

In recent research, PRF hair treatment has been found to reduce hair thinning and strengthen hair.1,2,4 Individual responses may vary, and your clinician will tell you what the evidence means for your particular pattern of hair loss.

Emma Conway carries out our PRP hair treatments. Where she identifies signs that suggest an underlying scalp or skin condition, such as inflammation, she will refer you to one of our consultant dermatologists before treatment goes ahead.

If you have had a hair transplant, your surgeon may have suggested PRP as part of your aftercare. Your clinician will administer six treatments over six months, unless your surgeon has given differing specific advice about timing or protocol. We will work to your surgeon's recommendations, so please bring that information with you.

Prices

Any investigations or additional treatment recommended during your consultation may involve further costs, which will be explained clearly before anything is booked.

Meet the Team

Emma Conway, Cosmetic Practitioner

Emma Conway carries out our PRP hair restoration treatments.

Emma worked in a busy NHS maternity service from 2017, supporting women and families through pregnancy and birth. She moved on from the NHS to follow her interest in laser hair removal and laser treatments, and in 2023 she established her own cosmetic clinic. She now offers those treatments at Midland Health.

Our Dermatology Team

Our consultant dermatologists support the hair pathway where a specialist assessment or further investigation is needed before any treatment is considered.

What to Expect From PRP Hair Treatment

Initial Consultation

You will have time to explain what has been happening and to ask whatever you need to ask.

Your clinician will take a history, look at your hair and scalp, and talk through the options, including the option of doing nothing for now.

Where PRP is appropriate, they will explain what it involves, how it might help your hair growth and what is uncertain about it.

If you already have an established diagnosis, you have been pre-screened, and nothing new comes up during the consultation, it may be possible to have your first treatment at the same appointment.

Our PRP Hair Treatment Process

On the day of a hair rejuvenation treatment, a clinician takes a small sample of blood from your arm and spins it in a centrifuge. Because we use i-PRF, no anticoagulant is added to the sample. This concentrates the platelets in a small amount of plasma, which forms a natural fibrin matrix. The clinician then injects this portion into the treatment area.

Afterwards

You may have some redness, mild swelling, tenderness or sensitivity, pinpoint bleeding or bruising where the injections were given, and some short-lived discomfort. These effects are normally mild and settle quickly.

Your clinician will tell you what to expect after the treatment and how to look after your scalp.

Follow-Up Appointments

PRP is given as a course rather than as a single treatment, and your clinician sets the plan out for you at the start.

For PRF hair treatment, the standard initial programme is three treatments over three months. A six-treatment course is available where a more intensive programme is advised.

After that, your clinician may recommend maintenance injections, between three and six months apart, depending on how your hair regrowth has responded.

Following a hair transplant, the typical recommendation is six treatments over six months, with the starting point and protocol taking account of your transplant surgeon's advice.

Is This the Right Service for You?

A consultation can help you understand whether PRP is likely to help your hair loss condition before you book. PRP treatments are for adults aged 18 and over.

You will have a medical assessment first. Your clinician will go through anything in your health or medication history that suggests PRP may not suit you.

If the cause of your hair loss is not clear, our dermatology service may be able to help.

FAQs

  • Does PRP Work?

For hair, published studies are encouraging. Your clinician will tell you where the evidence stands for your concern rather than giving you a general answer.

  • Does PRP Regrow Hair?

PRP and PRF hair treatments are used with the aim of stimulating hair growth and strengthening the hair you have. It is not an instant treatment, and responses vary between people. Your clinician will look at the pattern and history of your hair loss and tell you what is realistic in your case before you commit to a course.

  • How Much Does PRP Hair Restoration Cost?

Our prices are listed in full above. A single PRP hair session is £295, and courses are available. Your consultation is charged separately, and anything additional recommended during it will be explained and costed before it is arranged.

  • What Are the Side Effects of PRP?

PRP generally involves very little recovery or side effects. You may notice redness, mild swelling, tenderness or sensitivity, pinpoint bleeding or bruising at the injection sites, and some temporary discomfort. These are usually mild and short-lived. Keep injection sites clean and dry until fully healed to prevent infection.

Because PRP uses your own blood, there is no donor material involved. Your clinician will go through the risks that apply to your treatment before you consent to it.

  • When Is PRP Not Suitable?

PRP may not be suitable, or may need further medical assessment first, if you have:

    • an active infection
    • a significant platelet disorder or a very low platelet count
    • significant anaemia or certain other blood disorders
    • certain clotting disorders
    • blood-thinning medication
    • an active cancer or certain cancer histories
    • a significant systemic illness or an uncontrolled medical condition

Elective treatment is generally deferred during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

  • Will I Need to See a Dermatologist Before PRP for Hair Loss?

If the cause of your hair loss is unclear, or if there are features that suggest a more complex scalp or medical condition, we will arrange a dermatology assessment first. That includes:

    • sudden or rapid hair loss
    • patchy hair loss
    • an inflamed, scaling, sore or itchy scalp
    • suspected scarring alopecia
    • hair loss alongside symptoms elsewhere in the body
    • significant unexplained shedding
    • a complex medical history with a possible hormonal, nutritional or systemic cause
  • Is PRP Covered by Insurance?

PRP is not usually covered by private medical insurance, so it is normally self-funded. If you intend to use insurance, please contact us before booking so we can tell you where you stand.
