How Does The Fractional Laser Treatment Work?

Our Fractional Laser Treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser technology to improve skin texture, firmness, and tone. By creating microscopic holes in the skin's top layer, it triggers a controlled wound-healing response, stimulating collagen production and tissue regeneration. This process effectively reduces the appearance of scars, while also rejuvenating the skin overall.

What to Expect

Whilst undergoing a factional laser resurfacing treatment can sound daunting, our specialist team will be with you every step of the way to ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment journey. Here’s what to expect.

1

Before Your Treatment

Prior to your treatment, avoid exfoliating the area, sun exposure, and products containing AHA's and BHA's. Refrain from using retinoids or steroids.

2

On-the-Day Preparation

Your clinician will cleanse your skin thoroughly, removing all makeup and residue. No products will be applied except for SPF.

3

During Your Treatment

Your clinician will use a laser to ablate microscopic holes in the top layer of your skin (epidermis), causing controlled trauma. This initiates a wound-healing response, stimulating fibroblasts in the dermis to promote collagen production and tissue regeneration. The treatment may feel hot and prickly, rather than relaxing.

4

Post Treatment

After the treatment, you may experience pronounced redness (erythema) and a sensation similar to sunburn, which typically subsides within 24 hours. Over the following 5 to 7 days, old skin will flake away, revealing tighter, glowing, toned skin. For deep acne scarring, multiple sessions (typically 5-6) may be recommended for optimal results.

5

On-the-Day Preparation

With a recommended course of 5-6 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, patients can achieve significant improvements in their skin's appearance. During the recovery period, which typically lasts up to 7 days, old skin flakes away, revealing tighter, glowing skin underneath. Although temporary discomfort and redness may occur, they usually subside within a day or two.

FAQ

What factors contribute to scarring?

Scarring can result from various factors such as injury, surgery, acne, or certain skin conditions. The body's natural healing process involves the formation of scar tissue to repair damaged skin.

What are the three categories of scars?

The three main types of scars are hypertrophic scars, keloid scars, and atrophic scars. Laser treatments can effectively target various types of scars, promoting collagen production and skin rejuvenation.

What is the average cost of laser scar removal in the UK?

The cost of laser scar removal in the UK varies depending on factors such as the size and severity of the scars, as well as the number of sessions required. It's best to consult with a qualified clinician for an accurate quote tailored to your specific needs.

Is complete scar removal possible with laser treatments?

While laser treatments can significantly reduce the appearance of scars, complete removal may not always be possible. However, they can greatly improve the texture, tone, and overall appearance of the skin affected by scars.

Is permanent scar removal achievable?

Laser scar removal can lead to long-lasting results, but it's essential to understand that scars may not be completely eradicated. The treatment aims to minimise the visibility of scars and enhance the skin's appearance.

Is laser scar removal a worthwhile investment?

Whether laser scar removal is worth it depends on individual factors such as the severity of the scars, desired outcomes, and personal preferences. Many patients find the improvement in their skin's appearance to be valuable and empowering.

How uncomfortable is fractional laser scar removal?

Fractional laser scar removal is generally well-tolerated, with discomfort typically minimal and manageable. Your clinician may offer numbing cream or cooling techniques to enhance comfort during the procedure.

Do scars have the potential to vanish naturally?

While some scars may fade over time, complete disappearance without intervention is rare. Laser treatments and other scar management techniques can help minimise the appearance of scars and promote smoother skin texture.

Can massaging aid in enhancing scar appearance?

Massaging scar tissue can help improve blood circulation and soften the scar, potentially reducing its appearance over time. Combined with laser treatments, massage therapy can be an effective part of scar management.
